This commit removes the new optimized category style introduced in
previous commits (d37a0d40, 9a80d718 and 430c42ac), in favour of the
existent `categories_only`.
The `categories_only_optimized` category page style has been introduced
in commit d37a0d401c. This commit makes
sure that style is enforced for users who can see over 1000 categories
in order to keep `/categories` page functional.
The new style is called `categories_only_optimized` and it is designed
to show only the parent categories, without any subcategories. This
works best for communities with many categories (over a thousand).
The subcategories page was not paginated and it was using the
subcategory style from the category settings. The same page style should
be used for categories and subcategories page.
Using the CategoryDrop on the categories page redirected the user to the
"latest topics" page with topics only from that category. With these
changes, selecting a category will take the user to a "subcategories
page" where only the subcategories of the selected property will be
displayed.
## Why this change?
The previous implementation of the method generated the query to find the relevant topics and iterated over the results, processing them.
This behavior made difficult reusing or changing the query logic in classes extending `CategoryList`.
This commit extracts the query logic into another method called `relevant_topics_query ` which can be reused or overwritten in descendant classes.
When "lazy load categories" is enabled and parent_category_id was set,
the query fetching categories contained a contradiction filtering both
by parent_category_id and parent_category_id = NULL.
Why this change?
Prior to this change, the `CategoryList#find_relevant_topics` method was
loading and allocating all `CategoryFeaturedTopic` records in the
database to eventually only just use its `category_id` and `topic_id`
column. On a site with many `CategoryFeaturedTopic` records, the loading
of the ActiveRecord objects is a source of bottleneck.
The other problem with the `CategoryList#find_relevant_topics` method is
that it is unconditionally loading all records from the database even if
the user does not have access to the category. This again is wasteful.
What does this change do?
This commit makes it such that `CategoryList#find_relevant_topics` is
called only after `CategoryList#find_categories` in the `CategoryList#initialize`
method so that we can filter featured topics against categories that the
user has access to.
The second change is that Instead of loading `CategoryFeaturedTopic` records, we make an
inner join agains the `topics` table instead and skip any allocation of
`CatgoryFeaturedTopic` ActiveRecord objects.
The old strategy used to load 25 categories at a time, including the
subcategories. The new strategy loads 20 parent categories and at most
5 subcategories for each parent category, for a maximum of 120
categories in total.
The query that is now a subquery could return a long list of category
IDs, which slowed down the query considerably. This improvement reduces
the execution time from over 2 seconds down to about 100ms.
This commit refactor CategoryList to remove usage of EmberObject,
hopefully make the code more readable and fixes various edge cases with
lazy loaded categories (third level subcategories not being visible,
subcategories not being visible on category page, requesting for more
pages even if the last one did not return any results, etc).
The problems have always been here, but were not visible because a lot
of the processing was handled by the server and then the result was
serialized. With more of these being moved to the client side for the
lazy category loading, the problems became more obvious.
When `lazy_load_categories` is enabled, the categories are no longer
preloaded in the `Site` object, but instead they are being requested
on a need basis.
The categories page still loaded all categories at once, which was not
ideal for sites with many categories because ti would take a lot of
time to build and parse the response.
This commit adds pagination to the categories page using the LoadMore
helper. As the user scrolls through the categories page, more categories
are requested from the server and appended to the page.

There was a registry for preloaded site categories and a new one has
been introduced recently for categories serialized through a
CategoryList.
Having two registries created a lot of friction for developers and this
commit merges them into a single one, providing a unified API.
Recently, we added the option for watched tag/categories to take precedence over muted tag/categories. Therefore, `remove_muted_tags` is using `category_users` to check if categories are not watched. There was missing join in CategoryList which was causing an error.
This commit adds modifiers that allow plugins to change how categories and groups are prefetched into the application and listed in the respective controllers.
Possible use cases:
- prevent some categories/groups from being prefetched when the application loads for performance reasons.
- prevent some categories/groups from being listed in their respective index pages.
Featured topics are eventually serialized by `ListableTopicSerializer`
which calls `Topic#image_url` which requires us to preload
`Topic#topic_thumbnails`.
Adds a new upload field for a second dark mode category logo.
This alternative will be used when the browser is in dark mode (similar to the global site setting for a dark logo).
* FEATURE: Return subcategories on categories endpoint
When using the API subcategories will now be returned nested inside of
each category response under the `subcategory_list` param. We already
return all the subcategory ids under the `subcategory_ids` param, but
you then would have to make multiple separate API calls to fetch each of
those subcategories. This way you can get **ALL** of the categories
along with their subcategories in a single API response.
The UI will not be affected by this change because you need to pass in
the `include_subcategories=true` param in order for subcategories to be
returned.
In a follow up PR I'll add the API scoping for fetching categories so
that a readonly API key can be used for the `/categories.json` endpoint. This
endpoint should be used instead of the `/site.json` endpoint for
fetching a sites categories and subcategories.
* Update PR based on feedback
- Have spec check for specific subcategory
- Move comparison check out of loop
- Only populate subcategory list if option present
- Remove empty array initialization
- Update api spec to allow null response
* More PR updates based on feedback
- Use a category serializer for the subcategory_list
- Don't include the subcategory_list param if empty
- For the spec check for the subcategory by id
- Fix spec to account for param not present when empty
This is a recent regression introduced by https://github.com/discourse/discourse/pull/12937 which makes it so that when looking at a user profile that is not your own, specifically the category and tag notification settings, you would see your own settings instead of the target user. This is only a problem for admins because regular users cannot see these details for other users.
The issue was that we were using `scope` in the serializer, which refers to the current user, rather than using a scope for the target user via `Guardian.new(user)`.
However, on further inspection the `notification_levels_for` method for `TagUser` and `CategoryUser` did not actually need to be accepting an instance of Guardian, all that it was using it for was to check guardian.anonymous? which is just a fancy way of saying user.blank?. Changed this method to just accept a user instead and send the user in from the serializer.
Uncategorized was sometimes visible even if allow_uncategorized_topics
was false. This was especially happening on mobile, if at least one
topic was uncategorized.
We have the `# frozen_string_literal: true` comment on all our
files. This means all string literals are frozen. There is no need
to call #freeze on any literals.
For files with `# frozen_string_literal: true`
```
puts %w{a b}[0].frozen?
=> true
puts "hi".frozen?
=> true
puts "a #{1} b".frozen?
=> true
puts ("a " + "b").frozen?
=> false
puts (-("a " + "b")).frozen?
=> true
```

* DEV: Add data-notification-level attribute to category UI
* Show muted categories on the category page by default
This reverts commit ed9c21e42c.
* Remove redundant spec - muted categories are now visible by default
Instead of enabling `suppress_from_latest` setting on many categories now we can enable `mute_all_categories_by_default` site setting. Then users should opt-in to categories for them to appear in the latest and categories pages.
Zeitwerk simplifies working with dependencies in dev and makes it easier reloading class chains.
We no longer need to use Rails "require_dependency" anywhere and instead can just use standard
Ruby patterns to require files.
This is a far reaching change and we expect some followups here.
This reduces chances of errors where consumers of strings mutate inputs
and reduces memory usage of the app.
Test suite passes now, but there may be some stuff left, so we will run
a few sites on a branch prior to merging
