This commit bumps the bundled JDK to version 12.0.1. Note that we had to
add a new pattern here as Oracle has changed the source of the
builds. This commit will be backported to 6.7 in a different form to
bump the bundled JDK in the Docker images too.
hamcrest has some improvements in newer versions, like FileMatchers
that make assertions regarding file exists cleaner. This commit upgrades
to the latest version of hamcrest so we can start using new and improved
matchers.
This change updates our version of httpclient to version 4.5.8, which
contains the fix for HTTPCLIENT-1968, which is a bug where the client
started re-writing paths that contained encoded reserved characters
with their unreserved form.
* Bundle java in distributions
Setting up a jdk is currently a required external step when installing
elasticsearch. This is particularly problematic for the rpm/deb packages
as installing a jdk in the same package installation command does not
guarantee any order, so must be done in separate steps. Additionally,
JAVA_HOME must be set and often causes problems in selecting a correct
jdk when, for example, the system java is an older unsupported version.
This commit bundles platform specific openjdks into each distribution.
In addition to eliminating the issues above, it also presents future
possible improvements like using jlink to build jdk images only
containing modules that elasticsearch uses.

The apache commons http client implementations recently released
versions that solve TLS compatibility issues with the new TLS engine
that supports TLSv1.3 with JDK 11. This change updates our code to
use these versions since JDK 11 is a supported JDK and we should
allow the use of TLSv1.3.

This commit upgrades netty. This will close#35360. Netty started
throwing an IllegalArgumentException if a CompositeByteBuf is
created with < 2 components. Netty4Utils was updated to reflect this
change.
Our `REPRODUCE WITH` line wasn't working for tests with `(` or `)` in
the method name. This isn't super common, but happens sometimes for our
yml based rest tests. This is because randomized runner's globbing
mechanism dind't escape `(` or `)`. I filed this upstream at
https://github.com/randomizedtesting/randomizedtesting/issues/271
and Dawid kindly fixed the issue. This upgrades to pick up the fix.
Closes#35692
* Introduce property to set version qualifier
- VersionProperties.elasticsearch is now a string which can have qualifier
and snapshot too
- The Version class in the build no longer cares about snapshot and
qualifier.
* LeafCollector.setScorer() now takes a Scorable
* Scorers may not have null Weights
* IndexWriter.getFlushingBytes() reports how much memory is being used by IW threads writing to disk
The main benefit of the upgrade for users is the search optimization for top scored documents when the total hit count is not needed. However this optimization is not activated in this change, there is another issue opened to discuss how it should be integrated smoothly.
Some comments about the change:
* Tests that can produce negative scores have been adapted but we need to forbid them completely: #33309Closes#32899
The upcoming ML log structure finder functionality will use these
libraries, and it makes sense to use the same versions that are
being used elsewhere in Elasticsearch. This is especially true
with icu4j, which is pretty big.
The main highlight is the removal of the reclaim_deletes_weight in the TieredMergePolicy.
The es setting index.merge.policy.reclaim_deletes_weight is deprecated in this commit and the value is ignored. The new merge policy setting setDeletesPctAllowed should be added in a follow up.
This snapshot includes:
- LUCENE-8341: Record soft deletes in SegmentCommitInfo which will resolve#30851
- LUCENE-8335: Enforce soft-deletes field up-front
The new snapshot includes LUCENE-8324 which fixes missing checkpoint
after a fully deletes segment is dropped on flush. This snapshot should
resolves failed tests in the CorruptedFileIT suite.
Closes#30741Closes#30577
Upgrade to lucene-7.4.0-snapshot-1ed95c097b
This version contains:
* An Analyzer for Korean
* An IntervalQuery and IntervalsSource that retrieve minimum intervals of positional queries.
* A new API to retrieve matches (offsets and positions) of a query for a single document.
* Support for soft deletes in the index writer.
* A fixed shingle filter that handles index time synonyms.
* Support for emoji sequence in ICUTokenizer (with an upgrade to icu 61.1)
This new snapshot mostly brings a change to TopFieldCollector which can now
early terminate collection when trackTotalHits is `false`.
As a follow-up, we should replace our usage of
`EarlyTerminatingSortingCollector` with this new option.
The main highlight of this new snapshot is that it introduces the opportunity
for queries to opt out of caching. In case a query opts out of caching, not only
will it never be cached, but also no compound query that wraps it will be
cached.
While it's not possible to upgrade the Jackson dependencies
to their latest versions yet (see #27032 (comment) for more)
it's still possible to upgrade to the latest 2.8.x version.
Upgrade to Jackson 2.9.2 and also use a boolean `closed` flag to

is still correctly reported after the reader is closed.
There is a bug in Log4j on JDK 9 for walking the stack to find where a
log line is coming from. This bug is impacting some of our testing, so
this commit marks these tests as skippable only on JDK 9 until the bug
is fixed upstream.

In some cases our Windows builds fail due to long path names that arise
from a combination of long build job names plus long sub-project
names. While newer versions of Windows can handle long paths, invoking
batch scripts longer than 260 characters via cmd.exe is still
problematic. This leads to failing integration tests because we can not
run the commands to install plugins, create the keystore, and start the
node. This commit handles this by converting all paths on Windows used
to start an Elasticsearch node to short path names.

This commit introduces a nio based tcp transport into framework for
testing.
Currently Elasticsearch uses a simple blocking tcp transport for
testing purposes (MockTcpTransport). This diverges from production
where our current transport (netty) is non-blocking.
The point of this commit is to introduce a testing variant that more
closely matches the behavior of production instances.
Most notable changes:
- better update concurrency: LUCENE-7868
- TopDocs.totalHits is now a long: LUCENE-7872
- QueryBuilder does not remove the boolean query around multi-term synonyms:
LUCENE-7878
- removal of Fields: LUCENE-7500
For the `TopDocs.totalHits` change, this PR relies on the fact that the encoding
of vInts and vLongs are compatible: you can write and read with any of them as
long as the value can be represented by a positive int.
This snapshot has faster range queries on range fields (LUCENE-7828), more
accurate norms (LUCENE-7730) and the ability to use fake term frequencies
(LUCENE-7854).
We want to upgrade to Lucene 7 ahead of time in order to be able to check whether it causes any trouble to Elasticsearch before Lucene 7.0 gets released. From a user perspective, the main benefit of this upgrade is the enhanced support for sparse fields, whose resource consumption is now function of the number of docs that have a value rather than the total number of docs in the index.
Some notes about the change:
- it includes the deprecation of the `disable_coord` parameter of the `bool` and `common_terms` queries: Lucene has removed support for coord factors
- it includes the deprecation of the `index.similarity.base` expert setting, since it was only useful to configure coords and query norms, which have both been removed
- two tests have been marked with `@AwaitsFix` because of #23966, which we intend to address after the merge

This commit upgrades to the newest version of randomized runner. There
is a new additional check that allows ensuring the working directory
for each child jvm is empty. By default, this check will fail the test
run. However, for elasticsearch, we default to wipe the directory. For
example, if you previously told the runner to not wipe the directory, in
order to investigate a failure, the wipe option will delete this data
upon re-running the test.
This is related to #22116. Core no longer needs `SocketPermission`
`connect`.

- discovery-azure-classic plugin
- discovery-ec2 plugin
- discovery-gce plugin
- repository-azure plugin
- repository-gcs plugin
- repository-hdfs plugin
- repository-s3 plugin
And for tests:
- mocksocket jar
- rest client
- httpcore-nio jar
- httpasyncclient jar
* Upgrade to Lucene 6.4.0
`ValueSource`s are now converted to `DoubleValueSource`s using the Lucene adapter made for the migration to the new API in 6.4.0.
This integrates the mocksocket jar with elasticsearch tests. Mocksocket wraps actions requiring SocketPermissions in doPrivilege blocks. This will eventually allow SocketPermissions to be assigned to the mocksocket jar opposed to the entire elasticsearch codebase.

it some integration testing. I had to upgrade randomized-testing too so that

With this commit we add a benchmarks project that contains the necessary build
infrastructure and an example benchmark. It is added as a separate project to avoid
interfering with the regular build too much (especially sanity checks) and to keep
the microbenchmarks isolated.
Microbenchmarks are generated with `gradle :benchmarks:jmhJar` and can be run with
` gradle :benchmarks:jmh`.
We intentionally do not use the
[jmh-gradle-plugin](https://github.com/melix/jmh-gradle-plugin) as it causes all
sorts of problems (dependencies are not properly excluded, not all JMH parameters
can be set) and it adds another abstraction layer that is not needed.

update to lucene 6 jars
This commit works around an issue with hostname verification in HttpClient when using IPv6
addresses in URLs. When an IPv6 address is used in a URL it is typically wrapped with square
brackets. The hostname verifier for HttpClient does not recognize these as valid IPv6 addresses
and instead treats them as a DNS name. We wrap the strict hostname verifier for this version
of HttpClient and strip brackets if we need to.
The corresponding issue in HttpClient is https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HTTPCLIENT-1698
but the fix has not been released yet in a stable version.
Today we have the notion of a snapshot inside Version.java which makes
releasing complicated since to do a release Version.java must be changed.
This commit removes all notions of snapshot from the code and allows to
switch between snapshot and release build by specifying a system property on
the build. For instance running:
```
gradle run -Dbuild.snapshot=false
```
will build and package a release build while the default always
builds snapshots. Calls to the main rest action will still get the snapshot
information rendered out with the response.
