* Replace compile configuration usage with api (#58451)
- Use java-library instead of plugin to allow api configuration usage
- Remove explicit references to runtime configurations in dependency declarations
- Make test runtime classpath input for testing convention
- required as java library will by default not have build jar file
- jar file is now explicit input of the task and gradle will ensure its properly build
* Fix compile usages in 7.x branch

Move includeDataStream flag from an IndicesOptions to IndexNameExpressionResolver.Context
as a dedicated field that callers to IndexNameExpressionResolver can set.
Also alter indices stats api to support data streams.
The rollover api uses this api and otherwise rolling over data stream does no longer work.

Backport from: #54726
The INCLUDE_DATA_STREAMS indices option controls whether data streams can be resolved in an api for both concrete names and wildcard expressions. If data streams cannot be resolved then a 400 error is returned indicating that data streams cannot be used.
In this pr, the INCLUDE_DATA_STREAMS indices option is enabled in the following APIs: search, msearch, refresh, index (op_type create only) and bulk (index requests with op type create only). In a subsequent later change, we will determine which other APIs need to be able to resolve data streams and enable the INCLUDE_DATA_STREAMS indices option for these APIs.
Whether an api resolve all backing indices of a data stream or the latest index of a data stream (write index) depends on the IndexNameExpressionResolver.Context.isResolveToWriteIndex().
If isResolveToWriteIndex() returns true then data streams resolve to the latest index (for example: index api) and otherwise a data stream resolves to all backing indices of a data stream (for example: search api).

I've noticed that a lot of our tests are using deprecated static methods
from the Hamcrest matchers. While this is not a big deal in any
objective sense, it seems like a small good thing to reduce compilation
warnings and be ready for a new release of the matcher library if we
need to upgrade. I've also switched a few other methods in tests that
have drop-in replacements.

When 'rest_track_total_hits_as_int' is set to true, the total hits count in the response should be accurate. So we should set trackTotalHits to true if need when parsing the inline script of a search template request.

This commit changes how RestHandlers are registered with the
RestController so that a RestHandler no longer needs to register itself
with the RestController. Instead the RestHandler interface has new
methods which when called provide information about the routes
(method and path combinations) that are handled by the handler
including any deprecated and/or replaced combinations.
This change also makes the publication of RestHandlers safe since they
no longer publish a reference to themselves within their constructors.

Backport of #51950
This replaces the message we return for unknown queries with the standard
one that we use for unknown fields from `ObjectParser`. This is nice
because it includes "did you mean". One day we might convert parsing
queries to using object parser, but that looks complex. This change is
much smaller and seems useful.
Avoid backwards incompatible changes for 8.x and 7.6 by removing type
restriction on compile and Factory. Factories may optionally implement
ScriptFactory. If so, then they can indicate determinism and thus
cacheability.
**Backport**
Relates: #49466
In order to cache script results in the query shard cache, we need to
check if scripts are deterministic. This change adds a default method
to the script factories, `isResultDeterministic() -> false` which is
used by the `QueryShardContext`.
Script results were never cached and that does not change here. Future
changes will implement this method based on whether the results of the
scripts are deterministic or not and therefore cacheable.

This commit deprecates all constructors of HandledTransportAction
that take in a Supplier instead of a Writeable.Reader for response
objects.
in addition to the deprecation, the following modules were updated to
leverage Writeable
- modules:ingest-common
- modules:lang-mustache
relates #34389.
this commit removes usage of the deprecated
constructor with a single argument and no Writeable.Reader.
The purpose of this is to reduce the boilerplate necessary for
properly implementing a new action, as well as reducing the
chances of using the incorrect super constructor while classes
are being migrated to Writeable
relates #34389.
This commit moves the Supplier variant of HandledTransportAction to have
a different ordering than the Writeable.Reader variant. The Supplier
version is used for the legacy Streamable, and currently having the
location of the Writeable.Reader vs Supplier in the same place forces
using casts of Writeable.Reader to select the correct super constructor.
This change in ordering allows easier migration to Writeable.Reader.
relates #34389
The base classes for transport requests and responses currently
implement Streamable and Writeable. The writeTo method on these base
classes is implemented with an empty implementation. Not only does this
complicate subclasses to think they need to call super.writeTo, but it
also can lead to not implementing writeTo when it should have been
implemented, or extendiong one of these classes when not necessary,
since there is nothing to actually implement.
This commit removes the empty writeTo from these base classes, and fixes
subclasses to not call super and in some cases implement an empty
writeTo themselves.
relates #34389
Action is a class that encapsulates meta information about an action
that allows it to be called remotely, specifically the action name and
response type. With recent refactoring, the action class can now be
constructed as a static constant, instead of needing to create a
subclass. This makes the old pattern of creating a singleton INSTANCE
both misnamed and lacking a common placement.
This commit renames Action to ActionType, thus allowing the old INSTANCE
naming pattern to be TYPE on the transport action itself. ActionType
also conveys that this class is also not the action itself, although
this change does not rename any concrete classes as those will be
removed organically as they are converted to TYPE constants.
relates #34389
The Action base class currently works for both Streamable and Writeable
response types. This commit intorduces StreamableResponseAction, for
which only the legacy Action implementions which provide newResponse()
will extend. This eliminates the need for overriding newResponse() with
an UnsupportedOperationException.
relates #34389
This commit fixes a race in the test for the new response format with
search templates. The test indexes a document and then executes a
search with the expectation of 0 results. In some instances, the index
will refresh prior to the search execution and 1 hit will be found
causing the test fail.
Closes#42664
This PR removes the temporary change we made to the yml test harness in #37285
to automatically set `include_type_name` to `true` in index creation requests
if it's not already specified. This is possible now that the vast majority of
index creation requests were updated to be typeless in #37611. A few additional
tests also needed updating here.
Additionally, this PR updates the test harness to set `include_type_name` to
`false` in index creation requests when communicating with 6.x nodes. This
mirrors the logic added in #37611 to allow for typeless document write requests
in test set-up code. With this update in place, we can remove many references
to `include_type_name: false` from the yml tests.
With #37566 we have introduced the ability to merge multiple search responses into one. That makes it possible to expose a new way of executing cross-cluster search requests, that makes CCS much faster whenever there is network latency between the CCS coordinating node and the remote clusters. The coordinating node can now send a single search request to each remote cluster, which gets reduced by each one of them. from + size results are requested to each cluster, and the reduce phase in each cluster is non final (meaning that buckets are not pruned and pipeline aggs are not executed). The CCS coordinating node performs an additional, final reduction, which produces one search response out of the multiple responses received from the different clusters.
This new execution path will be activated by default for any CCS request unless a scroll is provided or inner hits are requested as part of field collapsing. The search API accepts now a new parameter called ccs_minimize_roundtrips that allows to opt-out of the default behaviour.

This PR attempts to remove all typed calls from our YAML REST tests. The PR adds include_type_name: false to create index requests that use a mapping and also to put mapping requests. It also removes _type from index requests where they haven't already been removed. The PR ignores tests named *_with_types.yml since this are specifically testing typed API behaviour.
The change also includes changing the test harness to add the type _doc to index, update, get and bulk requests that do not specify the document type when the test is running against a mixed 7.x/6.x cluster.

so we continue to test the legacy typed responses. XContent generation
for the typeless responses is currently only covered by REST tests,
but we will be adding unit test coverage for these as we implement
each typeless API in the Java HLRC.
This commit also refactors GetMappingsResponse to follow the same appraoch
as the other mappings-related responses, where we read include_type_name
out of the xContent params, instead of creating a second toXContent method.
This gives better consistency in the response parsing code.

In Lucene 8 searches can skip non-competitive hits if the total hit count is not requested.
It is also possible to track the number of hits up to a certain threshold. This is a trade off to speed up searches while still being able to know a lower bound of the total hit count. This change adds the ability to set this threshold directly in the track_total_hits search option. A boolean value (true, false) indicates whether the total hit count should be tracked in the response. When set as an integer this option allows to compute a lower bound of the total hits while preserving the ability to skip non-competitive hits when enough matches have been collected.

This commit changes the format of the `hits.total` in the search response to be an object with
a `value` and a `relation`. The `value` indicates the number of hits that match the query and the
`relation` indicates whether the number is accurate (in which case the relation is equals to `eq`)
or a lower bound of the total (in which case it is equals to `gte`).
This change also adds a parameter called `rest_total_hits_as_int` that can be used in the
search APIs to opt out from this change (retrieve the total hits as a number in the rest response).
Note that currently all search responses are accurate (`track_total_hits: true`) or they don't contain
`hits.total` (`track_total_hits: true`). We'll add a way to get a lower bound of the total hits in a
follow up (to allow numbers to be passed to `track_total_hits`).
Relates #33028
The support for rest_total_hits_as_int has already been merged to 6x
in #35848 so this change adds this new option to master. The plan was
to add this new option as part of #35848 but we've decided to wait a few
days before merging this breaking change so this commit just handles
the new option as a noop exactly like 6x for now. This will allow
users to migrate to this parameter before #35848 is merged.
Relates #33028
This PR adds deprecation warnings to the relevant `Rest*Action` classes, plus tests in `Rest*ActionTests`. No updates to REST tests, the Java HLRC, or documentation were necessary, since they didn't make use of types.
With this change, `Version` no longer carries information about the qualifier,
we still need a way to show the "display version" that does have both
qualifier and snapshot. This is now stored by the build and red from `META-INF`.
Today if a wildcard, date-math expression or alias expands/resolves
to an index that is search-throttled we still search it. This is likely
not the desired behavior since it can unexpectedly slow down searches
significantly.
This change adds a new indices option that allows `search`, `count`
and `msearch` to ignore throttled indices by default. Users can
force expansion to throttled indices by using `ignore_throttled=true`
on the rest request to expand also to throttled indices.

The contains syntax was added in #30874 but the skips were not properly
put in place.
The java runner has the feature so the tests will run as part of the

pace.
Since all calls to `ESLoggerFactory` outside of the logging package were
deprecated, it seemed like it'd simplify things to migrate all of the
deprecated calls and declare `ESLoggerFactory` to be package private.
This does that.
In #29623 we added `Request` object flavored requests to the low level
REST client and in #30315 we deprecated the old `performRequest`s. In a
long series of PRs I've changed all of the old style requests that I
could find with `grep`. In this PR I change all requests that I could
find by *removing* the deprecated methods. Since this is a non-trivial
change I do not include actually removing the deprecated requests. I'll
do that in a follow up. But this should be the last set of usage
removals before the actual deprecated method removal. Yay!
Removes support for storing scripts without the usual json around the
script. So You can no longer do:
```
POST _scripts/<templatename>
{
"query": {
"match": {
"title": "{{query_string}}"
}
}
}
```
and must instead do:
```
POST _scripts/<templatename>
{
"script": {
"lang": "mustache",
"source": {
"query": {
"match": {
"title": "{{query_string}}"
}
}
}
}
}
```
This improves error reporting when you attempt to store a script but don't
quite get the syntax right. Before, there was a good chance that we'd
think of it as a "raw" template and just store it. Now we won't do that.
Nice.

TransportAction currently contains 2 doExecute methods, one which takes
a the task, and one that does not. The latter is what some subclasses
implement, while the first one just calls the latter, dropping the given
task. This commit combines these methods, in favor of just always
assuming a task is present.
Most transport actions don't need the node ThreadPool. This commit
removes the ThreadPool as a super constructor parameter for
TransportAction. The actions that do need the thread pool then have a
member added to keep it from their own constructor.
Most transport actions don't need to resolve index names. This commit
removes the index name resolver as a super constructor parameter for
TransportAction. The actions that do need the resolver then have a
member added to keep the resolver from their own constructor.
Since #30966, Action no longer has anything but a call to the
GenericAction super constructor. This commit renames GenericAction
into Action, thus eliminating the Action class. Additionally, this
commit removes the Request generic parameter of the class, since
it was unused.
Previously this was called for the combine script only. This change checks for self references for
init, map, and reduce scripts as well, and adds unit test coverage for the init, map, and combine cases.
This commit removes the RequestBuilder generic type from Action. It was
needed to be used by the newRequest method, which in turn was used by
client.prepareExecute. Both of these methods are now removed, along with
the existing users of prepareExecute constructing the appropriate
builder directly.
Currently failures to compile a script usually lead to a ScriptException, which

ScriptException to return 400 (bad request) as status code.

* Decouple XContentBuilder from BytesReference
This commit removes all mentions of `BytesReference` from `XContentBuilder`.
This is needed so that we can completely decouple the XContent code and move it

While this change appears large, it is due to two main changes, moving
`.bytes()` and `.string()` out of XContentBuilder itself into static methods
`BytesReference.bytes` and `Strings.toString` respectively. The rest of the
change is code reacting to these changes (the majority of it in tests).

Today we require users to prepare their indices for split operations.
Yet, we can do this automatically when an index is created which would
make the split feature a much more appealing option since it doesn't have
any 3rd party prerequisites anymore.
This change automatically sets the number of routinng shards such that
an index is guaranteed to be able to split once into twice as many shards.
The number of routing shards is scaled towards the default shard limit per index
such that indices with a smaller amount of shards can be split more often than
larger ones. For instance an index with 1 or 2 shards can be split 10x
(until it approaches 1024 shards) while an index created with 128 shards can only
be split 3x by a factor of 2. Please note this is just a default value and users
can still prepare their indices with `index.number_of_routing_shards` for custom
splitting.
NOTE: this change has an impact on the document distribution since we are changing
the hash space. Documents are still uniformly distributed across all shards but since
we are artificually changing the number of buckets in the consistent hashign space
document might be hashed into different shards compared to previous versions.
This is a 7.0 only change.
We were accidentally defaulting it to the scroll size.
Untwists some of the tricks that we play with parsing
so that the size is no longer scrambled.

The `type` field has been deprecated in 5.0 and can be removed. It has been

be removed, the phrase and phrase prefix query builders still provide this
parameter.
The current script service has a script compilation limit for a one
minute window. This is set to a small default value of 15. Instead of
increasing that default value, this commit introduces a new setting
that allows to configure a rate per time unit, so that the script service can deal with bursts better.
The new setting is named `script.max_compilations_rate`,
requires a nonnegative number and a positive time value.
The default is `75/5m`, which is equivalent to the existing 15 per minute.
Raw requests are supported only by the java yaml test runner and were introduced to test docs snippets. Some yaml tests ended up using them (see #23497) which causes failures for other language clients. This commit migrates those yaml tests to Java tests that send requests through the Java low-level REST client, and also moves the ability to send raw requests to a special client that's only available when testing docs snippets.
Closes#25694
Also has updates to ScriptMetaData for allowing the old namespace format to be loaded all the way back through 5.0; however, it will throw an exception if two scripts share the same id but different languages.
Requests that execute a stored script will no longer be allowed to specify the lang of the script. This information is stored in the cluster state making only an id necessary to execute against. Putting a stored script will still require a lang.
QueryParseContext is currently only used as a wrapper for an XContentParser, so
this change removes it entirely and changes the appropriate APIs that use it so
far to only accept a parser instead.
This commit adds back "id" as the key within a script to specify a
stored script (which with file scripts now gone is no longer ambiguous).
It also adds "source" as a replacement for "code". This is in an attempt
to normalize how scripts are specified across both put stored scripts and script usages, including search template requests. This also deprecates the old inline/stored keys.
REST handlers that require a body will throw an an ElasticsearchParseException "request body required".
REST handlers that require a body OR source param will throw an ElasticsearchParseException "request body or source param required".
Replaced asserts in BulkRequest parsing code with a more descriptive IllegalArgumentException if the line contains an empty object.
Updated bulk REST test to verify an empty action line is rejected properly.
Updated BulkRequestTests with randomized testing for an empty action line.
Used try-with-resouces for XContentParser in AbstractBulkByQueryRestHandler.
This commit creates TemplateScript and associated classes so that
templates no longer need a special ScriptService.compileTemplate method.
The execute() method is equivalent to the old run() method.

This commit adds an optional `context` url parameter to the put stored
script request. When a context is specified, the script is compiled
against that context before storing, as a validation the script will
work when used in that context.
Removes the need for the `_UNRELEASED` suffix on versions by detecting if a version should be unreleased or not based on the versions around it. This should make it simpler to automate the task of adding a new version label.
This commit renames the concept of the "compiled type" to a "factory
type", along with all implementations of this class to be named Factory.
This brings it inline with the classes purpose.
This commit adds collection of all contexts to the parameters of
getScriptEngine. This will allow script engines like painless to
precache extra information about the contexts.
This is a simple refactoring to move the context definitions into the
type that they use. While we have multiple context names for the same
class at the moment, this will eventually become one ScriptContext per
instance type, so the pattern of a static member on the interface called
CONTEXT can be used. This commit also moves the consolidated list of
contexts provided by core ES into ScriptModule.
This commit changes the compile method of ScriptEngine to be generic in
the same way it is on ScriptService. This moves the shim of handling the
two existing context classes into each script engine, so that each
engine can be worked on independently to convert to real handling of
contexts.
This commit modifies the compile method of ScriptService to be context
aware. The ScriptContext is now a generic class which contains both the
instance type and compiled type for a script. Instance type may be
stateful (for example, pre loading field information for the index a
script will execute on, like in expressions), while the compiled type is
stateless and used to construct instance type instances. This change is
only a first step to cutover ScriptService to the new paradigm. It only
converts callers to the script service, and has a small shim to wrap
compilation from the script engines to support the current two fixed
instance types, SearchScript and ExecutableScript.
Since groovy was removed, we no longer have any ScriptEngines with
resources to release. We may want to keep the option open for a script
engine to close resources, but this would not be common. This commit
adds a default implementation to ScriptEngine for `close()` to reduce
the boiler plate that must be added for a ScriptEngine implementation.
As we work towards contexts implying the return type of compilation, we
first need ScriptContext to not be an enum. This commit removes the
Standard enum and Plugin subclass of ScriptContext.
