This commit fixes the currently broken gradle build resulted from the renaming work. It reverts a few dependencies and comments out the `opensearch_distibutions` task which is currently failing for some builds. We will address these separately in the future once we have a working build.

This commit removes `integTest` task from all es-plugins.
Most relevant projects have been converted to use yamlRestTest, javaRestTest,
or internalClusterTest in prior PRs.
A few projects needed to be adjusted to allow complete removal of this task
* x-pack/plugin - converted to use yamlRestTest and javaRestTest
* plugins/repository-hdfs - kept the integTest task, but use `rest-test` plugin to define the task
* qa/die-with-dignity - convert to javaRestTest
* x-pack/qa/security-example-spi-extension - convert to javaRestTest
* multiple projects - remove the integTest.enabled = false (yay!)

There are currently half a dozen ways to add plugins and modules for
test clusters to use. All of them require the calling project to peek
into the plugin or module they want to use to grab its bundlePlugin
task, and then both depend on that task, as well as extract the archive
path the task will produce. This creates cross project dependencies that
are difficult to detect, and if the dependent plugin/module has not yet
been configured, the build will fail because the task does not yet
exist.
This commit makes the plugin and module methods for testclusters
symmetetric, and simply adding a file provider directly, or a project
path that will produce the plugin/module zip. Internally this new
variant uses normal configuration/dependencies across projects to get
the zip artifact. It also has the added benefit of no longer needing the
caller to add to the test task a dependsOn for bundlePlugin task.
- Replace immediate task creations by using task avoidance api
- One step closer to #56610
- Still many tasks are created during configuration phase. Tackled in separate steps
* Add doc runtime class path
* Use getAllHttpSocketURI.get(0) instead of getAllHttpSocketURI to get a single
test cluster URL rather than a list

This commit moves the modules REST tests to the
newly introduced yamlRestTest source set. A few
tests have also been re-named to include the correct
IT suffix. Without changing the names, the testing
conventions task would fail since now that the YAML
tests are no longer present pacify the convention.
These tests have moved to the internalClusterTest
source set.
related: #56841
This commit creates a new Gradle plugin to provide a separate task name
and source set for running YAML based REST tests. The only project
converted to use the new plugin in this PR is distribution/archives/integ-test-zip.
For which the testing has been moved to :rest-api-spec since it makes the most
sense and it avoids a small but awkward change to the distribution plugin.
The remaining cases in modules, plugins, and x-pack will be handled in followups.
This plugin is distinctly different from the plugin introduced in #55896 since
the YAML REST tests are intended to be black box tests over HTTP. As such they
should not (by default) have access to the classpath for that which they are testing.
The YAML based REST tests will be moved to separate source sets (yamlRestTest).
The which source is the target for the test resources is dependent on if this
new plugin is applied. If it is not applied, it will default to the test source
set.
Further, this introduces a breaking change for plugin developers that
use the YAML testing framework. They will now need to either use the new source set
and matching task, or configure the rest resources to use the old "test" source set that
matches the old integTest task. (The former should be preferred).
As part of this change (which is also breaking for plugin developers) the
rest resources plugin has been removed from the build plugin and now requires
either explicit application or application via the new YAML REST test plugin.
Plugin developers should be able to fix the breaking changes to the YAML tests
by adding apply plugin: 'elasticsearch.yaml-rest-test' and moving the YAML tests
under a yamlRestTest folder (instead of test)
* Replace compile configuration usage with api (#58451)
- Use java-library instead of plugin to allow api configuration usage
- Remove explicit references to runtime configurations in dependency declarations
- Make test runtime classpath input for testing convention
- required as java library will by default not have build jar file
- jar file is now explicit input of the task and gradle will ensure its properly build
* Fix compile usages in 7.x branch
A JSON schema was recently introduced for the REST API specification. #54252
This PR introduces a 3rd party validation tool to ensure that the
REST specification conforms to the schema.
The task is applied to the 3 projects that contain REST API specifications.
The plugin wires this task into the precommit commit task, and should be
considered as part of the public API for the build tools for any plugin
developer to contribute their plugin's specification.
An ignore parameter has been introduced for the task to allow specific
file to be ignored from the validation. The ignored files in this PR
will soon get issues logged and a link so they can be fixed.
Closes#54314
This change converts the module and plugin parameters
for testClusters to be lazy. Meaning that the values
are not resolved until they are actually used. This
removes the requirement to use project.afterEvaluate to
be able to resolve the bundle artifact.
Note - this does not completely remove the need for afterEvaluate
since it is still needed for the custom resource extension.
This upgrades Painless to use the latest ASM libraries providing support up
to Java 14. Note the library is not published with the latest versions in an
"all" package, so we pick up each lib independently that's required. There
were some changes to the getType method that require descriptors to be
used in place of internal class names.
Backport of #48849. Update `.editorconfig` to make the Java settings the
default for all files, and then apply a 2-space indent to all `*.gradle`
files. Then reformat all the files.
* Convert RunTask to use testclusers, remove ClusterFormationTasks
This PR adds a new RunTask and a way for it to start a
testclusters cluster out of band and block on it to replace
the old RunTask that used ClusterFormationTasks.
With this we can now remove ClusterFormationTasks.
This commit adds CNAME reporting for transport.publish_address same way
it's done for http.publish_address.

Well, we have a test here that intentionally causes an OutOfMemoryError,
to ensure that Painless handles it (I still strongly disagree with doing
this). This causes two things to happen: an OutOfMemoryError to be
dumped to the console, and the heap to be dumped to disk. This makes it
look like we had an OutOfMemoryError while running tests, and the tests
did not fail properly. This commit changes the tests configuration so
that we suppress the heap dump, which also causes the OutOfMemoryError
to no longer be dumped to the console.
This adds a gradle task called generateContextDoc in the Painless module. The
task will start a cluster, issue commands against the context rest api for
Painless, and generate documentation for each API per context. Each context
has a first page of classes sorted by package first and class name second,
along with a page per package with each classes' constructors, methods, and
fields. A link is generated for each constructor, method, and field to a JavaDoc
page when possible.
* Replace usages RandomizedTestingTask with built-in Gradle Test (#40978)
This commit replaces the existing RandomizedTestingTask and supporting code with Gradle's built-in JUnit support via the Test task type. Additionally, the previous workaround to disable all tasks named "test" and create new unit testing tasks named "unitTest" has been removed such that the "test" task now runs unit tests as per the normal Gradle Java plugin conventions.

* Fix forking JVM runner
* Don't bump shadow plugin version
This commit switches the joda time backcompat in scripting to use
augmentation over ZonedDateTime. The augmentation methods provide
compatibility with the missing methods between joda's DateTime and
java's ZonedDateTime. Due to getDayOfWeek returning an enum in the java
API, ZonedDateTime is wrapped so that the method can return int like the
joda time does. The java time api version is renamed to
getDayOfWeekEnum, which will be kept through 7.x for compatibility while
users switch back to getDayOfWeek once joda compatibility is removed.
This commit adds a boolean system property, `es.scripting.use_java_time`,
which controls the concrete return type used by doc values within
scripts. The return type of accessing doc values for a date field is
changed to Object, essentially duck typing the type to allow
co-existence during the transition from joda time to java time.
* Handle missing values in painless
Throw an exception for `doc['field'].value`
if this document is missing a value for the `field`.
For 7.0:
This is the default behaviour from 7.0
For 6.x:
To enable this behavior from 6.x, a user can set a jvm.option:
`-Des.script.exception_for_missing_value=true` on a node.
If a user does not enable this behavior, a deprecation warning is logged on start up.
Closes#29286
In order to build a plugin that extends the painless whitelist, the spi
classes must be available to the plugin at compile time. This commit
moves the spi classes into a separate jar which will be published. Any
plugin authors whiching to extend painless through spi would then add a
compileOnly dependency on this jar.
Right now if you run `gradle regen` on Windows you'll get `CRLF` line
endings on all the ANTLR generated files because we run
```
ant.fixcrlf(srcdir: outputPath) {
patternset(includes: 'Painless*.java')
}
```
The docs for fixcrlf say that the default line endings that it
corrects to is based on the OS:
https://ant.apache.org/manual/Tasks/fixcrlf.html
This change locks it to `LF`.
Today we have all non-plugin mappers in core. I'd like to start moving those
that neither map to json datatypes nor are very frequently used like `date` or
`ip` to a module.
This commit creates a new module called `mappers-extra` and moves the
`scaled_float` and `token_count` mappers to it. I'd like to eventually move
`range` fields there but it's more complicated due to their intimate
relationship with range queries.

The current script service has a script compilation limit for a one
minute window. This is set to a small default value of 15. Instead of
increasing that default value, this commit introduces a new setting
that allows to configure a rate per time unit, so that the script service can deal with bursts better.
The new setting is named `script.max_compilations_rate`,
requires a nonnegative number and a positive time value.
The default is `75/5m`, which is equivalent to the existing 15 per minute.
Links to inner classes were using `$` in urls instead of `.`, causing
them to 404.
Also fixes the doc generation code to generate docs into the correct
directory. We moved the docs but never updated the generation code.
The current rest backcompat tests, which run against a mixed cluster of
5.x and 6.0 nodes, depend on snapshot builds of 5.x. However, this has
the potential for inconsistency that results in CI failures, and happens
quite often, whenever some backcompat logic is added to 5.x, but the bwc
test on master fails because the 5.x code has not yet been published as
a snapshot.
This change creates a git clone of the 5.x branch,
builds the zip distribution, and ties that into gradle substitutions for
the 5.x version.
Gradle's finalizedBy on tasks only ensures one task runs after another,
but not immediately after. This is problematic for our integration tests
since it allows multiple project's integ test clusters to be
simultaneously. While this has not been a problem thus far (gradle 2.13
happened to keep the finalizedBy tasks close enough that no clusters
were running in parallel), with gradle 3.3 the task graph generation has
changed, and numerous clusters may be running simultaneously, causing
memory pressure, and thus generally slower tests, or even failure if the
system has a limited amount of memory (eg in a vagrant host).
This commit reworks how integ tests are configured. It adds an
`integTestCluster` extension to gradle which is equivalent to the current
`integTest.cluster` and moves the rest test runner task to
`integTestRunner`. The `integTest` task is then just a dummy task,
which depends on the cluster runner task, as well as the cluster stop
task. This means running `integTest` in one project will both run the
rest tests, and shut down the cluster, before running `integTest` in
another project.
Adds "Appending B. Painless API Reference", a reference of all classes
and methods available from Painless. Removes links to java packages
because they contain methods that we don't expose and don't contain
methods that we do expose (the ones in Augmentation). Instead this
generates a list of every class and every exposed method using the same
type information available to the
interpreter/compiler/whatever-we-call-it. From there you can jump to
the relevant docs.
Right now you build all the asciidoc files by running
```
gradle generatePainlessApi
```
These files are expected to be committed because we build the docs
without running `gradle`.
Also changes the output of `Debug.explain` so that it is easy to
search for the class in the generated reference documentation.
You can also run it in an IDE safely if you pass the path to the
directory in which to generate the docs as the first parameter. It'll
blow away the entire directory an recreate it from scratch so be careful.
And then you can build the docs by running something like:
```
../docs/build_docs.pl --out ../built_docs/ --doc docs/reference/index.asciidoc --open
```
That is, if you have checked out https://github.com/elastic/docs in
`../docs`. Wait a minute or two and your browser will pop open in with
all of Elasticsearch's reference documentation. If you go to
`http://localhost:8000/painless-api-reference.html` you can see this
list. Or you can get there by following the links to `Modules` and
`Scripting` and `Painless` and then clicking the link in the paragraphs
below titled `Appendix B. Painless API Reference`.
I like having these in asciidoc because we can deep link to them from the
rest of the guide with constructs like
`<<painless-api-reference-Object-hashCode-0>>` and
`<<painless-api-reference->>` and we get link checking. Then the only
brittle link maintenance bit is the link generation for javadoc. Which
sucks. But I think it is important that we link to the methods directly
so they are easy to find.

When compiling many dynamically changing scripts, parameterized
scripts (<https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/master/modules-scripting-using.html#prefer-params>)
should be preferred. This enforces a limit to the number of scripts that
can be compiled within a minute. A new dynamic setting is added -
`script.max_compilations_per_minute`, which defaults to 15.

This also fixes a bug in `ScriptService` where requests being executed
concurrently on a single node could cause a script to be compiled
multiple times (many in the case of a powerful node with many shards)
due to no synchronization between checking the cache and compiling the
script. There is now synchronization so that a script being compiled
will only be compiled once regardless of the number of concurrent
searches on a node.
