Backport of #48849. Update `.editorconfig` to make the Java settings the
default for all files, and then apply a 2-space indent to all `*.gradle`
files. Then reformat all the files.
Previous behavior while copying HTTP headers to the ThreadContext,
would allow multiple HTTP headers with the same name, handling only
the first occurrence and disregarding the rest of the values. This
can be confusing when dealing with multiple Headers as it is not
obvious which value is read and which ones are silently dropped.
According to RFC-7230, a client must not send multiple header fields
with the same field name in a HTTP message, unless the entire field
value for this header is defined as a comma separated list or this
specific header is a well-known exception.
This commits changes the behavior in order to be more compliant to
the aforementioned RFC by requiring the classes that implement
ActionPlugin to declare if a header can be multi-valued or not when
registering this header to be copied over to the ThreadContext in
ActionPlugin#getRestHeaders.
If the header is allowed to be multivalued, then all such headers
are read from the HTTP request and their values get concatenated in
a comma-separated string.
If the header is not allowed to be multivalued, and the HTTP
request contains multiple such Headers with different values, the
request is rejected with a 400 status.
This commit removes a use of Setting#getRaw from the deprecation header
tests. The use of Setting#getRaw is not needed here, the x-content
infrastructure will take care of emitting the appropriate values here,
and so the caller does not need to convert these to string
representations of the settings values.
Backport of #45794 to 7.x. Convert most `awaitBusy` calls to
`assertBusy`, and use asserts where possible. Follows on from #28548 by
@liketic.
There were a small number of places where it didn't make sense to me to
call `assertBusy`, so I kept the existing calls but renamed the method to
`waitUntil`. This was partly to better reflect its usage, and partly so
that anyone trying to add a new call to awaitBusy wouldn't be able to find
it.
I also didn't change the usage in `TransportStopRollupAction` as the
comments state that the local awaitBusy method is a temporary
copy-and-paste.
Other changes:
* Rework `waitForDocs` to scale its timeout. Instead of calling
`assertBusy` in a loop, work out a reasonable overall timeout and await
just once.
* Some tests failed after switching to `assertBusy` and had to be fixed.
* Correct the expect templates in AbstractUpgradeTestCase. The ES
Security team confirmed that they don't use templates any more, so
remove this from the expected templates. Also rewrite how the setup
code checks for templates, in order to give more information.
* Remove an expected ML template from XPackRestTestConstants The ML team
advised that the ML tests shouldn't be waiting for any
`.ml-notifications*` templates, since such checks should happen in the
production code instead.
* Also rework the template checking code in `XPackRestTestHelper` to give
more helpful failure messages.
* Fix issue in `DataFrameSurvivesUpgradeIT` when upgrading from < 7.4
This test verifies automatic cancellation of search requests on connection close.
It was previously not present in 7.x as the http client was subject do a bug which
made testing cancellation of requests impossible. Now that the bug is fixed upstream,
we can also backport this test
* Testclusters: Convert additional projects
Found some more that were not using testclusters from elasticsearch-ci/1
* Allow IOException too
* Make the client more resilient
* Deprecate types in index API
- deprecate type-based constructors of IndexRequest
- update tests to use typeless IndexRequest constructors
- no yaml tests as they have been already added in #35790

This commit removes the `MockTcpTransport` as a transport option for
`ESIntegTestCase`. It is the first step in replacing the usages of
`MockTcpTransport` with `MockNioTransport`.
Stop passing `Settings` to `AbstractComponent`'s ctor. This allows us to
stop passing around `Settings` in a *ton* of places. While this change
touches many files, it touches them all in fairly small, mechanical
ways, doing a few things per file:
1. Drop the `super(settings);` line on everything that extends
`AbstractComponent`.
2. Drop the `settings` argument to the ctor if it is no longer used.
3. If the file doesn't use `logger` then drop `extends
AbstractComponent` from it.
4. Clean up all compilation failure caused by the `settings` removal
and drop any now unused `settings` isntances and method arguments.
I've intentionally *not* removed the `settings` argument from a few
files:
1. TransportAction
2. AbstractLifecycleComponent
3. BaseRestHandler
These files don't *need* `settings` either, but this change is large
enough as is.
Relates to #34488
Drops the `Settings` member from `AbstractComponent`, moving it from the
base class on to the classes that use it. For the most part this is a
mechanical change that doesn't drop `Settings` accesses. The one
exception to this is naming threads where it switches from an invocation
that passes `Settings` and extracts the node name to one that explicitly
passes the node name.
This change doesn't drop the `Settings` argument from
`AbstractComponent`'s ctor because this change is big enough as is.
We'll do that in a follow up change.
Drops the `deprecationLogger` from `AbstractComponent`, moving it to
places where we need it. This saves us from building a bunch of
`DeprecationLogger`s that we don't need.
Relates to #34488
After discussing on the team's FixItFriday, we concluded that
static final instance variables that are mutable should be lowercased.
Historically, DeprecationLogger was uppercased more frequently than lowercased.
This is related to #27260 and #28898. This commit adds the transport-nio
plugin as a random option when running the http smoke tests. As part of
this PR, I identified an issue where cors support was not properly
enabled causing these tests to fail when using transport-nio. This
commit also fixes that issue.
This modifies the high level rest client to allow calling code to
customize per request options for the bulk API. You do the actual
customization by passing a `RequestOptions` object to the API call
which is set on the `Request` that is generated by the high level
client. It also makes the `RequestOptions` a thing in the low level
rest client. For now that just means you use it to customize the
headers and the `httpAsyncResponseConsumerFactory` and we'll add
node selectors and per request timeouts in a follow up.
I only implemented this on the bulk API because it is the first one
in the list alphabetically and I wanted to keep the change small
enough to review. I'll convert the remaining APIs in a followup.
Adding headers rather than setting them all at once seems more
user-friendly and we already do it in a similar way for parameters
(see Request#addParameter).
In #29623 we added `Request` object flavored requests to the low level
REST client and in #30315 we deprecated the the old requests. This
changes many calls in the `qa` projects to use the new version.
Today when processing a request for a URL path for which we can not find
a handler we send back a plain-text response. Yet, we have the accept
header in our hand and can respect the accepted media type of the
request. This commit addresses this.
This commit removes the http.enabled setting. While all real nodes (started with bin/elasticsearch) will always have an http binding, there are many tests that rely on the quickness of not actually needing to bind to 2 ports. For this case, the MockHttpTransport.TestPlugin provides a dummy http transport implementation which is used by default in ESIntegTestCase.

* Decouple XContentBuilder from BytesReference
This commit removes all mentions of `BytesReference` from `XContentBuilder`.
This is needed so that we can completely decouple the XContent code and move it
into its own dependency.
While this change appears large, it is due to two main changes, moving
`.bytes()` and `.string()` out of XContentBuilder itself into static methods
`BytesReference.bytes` and `Strings.toString` respectively. The rest of the
change is code reacting to these changes (the majority of it in tests).
Relates to #28504
This is related to #27260. This commit moves the NioTransport from
:test:framework to a new nio-transport plugin. Additionally, supporting
tcp decoding classes are moved to this plugin. Generic byte reading and
writing contexts are moved to the nio library.
Additionally, this commit adds a basic MockNioTransport to
:test:framework that is a TcpTransport implementation for testing that
is driven by nio.
At current, we do not feel there is enough of a reason to shade the low
level rest client. It caused problems with commons logging and IDE's
during the brief time it was used. We did not know exactly how many
users will need this, and decided that leaving shading out until we
gather more information is best. Users can still shade the jar
themselves. For information and feeback, see issue #26366.

This reverts commit 2c271f0f22.
This reverts commit 9d10dbea39.
This reverts commit e816ef89a2.
This commit adds the nio transport as an option in place of the mock tcp
transport for tests. Each test will only use one transport type. The
transport type is decided by a random boolean generated inside of the
`ESTestCase` class.
This commit removes all external dependencies from the rest client jar
and shades them in an 'org.elasticsearch.client' package within the jar
using shadowJar gradle plugin. All projects that depended on the
existing jar have been converted to using the 'org.elasticsearch.client'
package prefixes to interact with the rest client.

This commit adds an LRU set to used to determine if a keyed deprecation

Currently QueryParseContext is only a thin wrapper around an XContentParser that
adds little functionality of its own. I provides helpers for long deprecated
field names which can be removed and two helper methods that can be made static
and moved to other classes. This is a first step in helping to remove
QueryParseContext entirely.
When a setting is deprecated, if that setting is used repeatedly we
currently emit a deprecation warning every time the setting is used. In
cases like hitting settings endpoints over and over against a node with
a lot of deprecated settings, this can lead to excessive deprecation
warnings which can crush a node. This commit ensures that a given
setting only sees deprecation logging at most once.

* Adds nodes usage API to monitor usages of actions
The nodes usage API has 2 main endpoints
/_nodes/usage and /_nodes/{nodeIds}/usage return the usage statistics
for all nodes and the specified node(s) respectively.
At the moment only one type of usage statistics is available, the REST
actions usage. This records the number of times each REST action class is
called and when the nodes usage api is called will return a map of rest
action class name to long representing the number of times each of the action
classes has been called.
Still to do:
* [x] Create usage service to store usage statistics
* [x] Record usage in REST layer
* [x] Add Transport Actions
* [x] Add REST Actions
* [x] Tests
* [x] Documentation
* Rafactors UsageService so counts are done by the handlers
* Fixing up docs tests
* Adds a name to all rest actions
* Addresses review comments
Netty uses the number of processors for sizing various resources (e.g.,
thread pools, buffer pools, etc.). However, it uses the runtime number
of available processors which might not match the configured number of
processors as set in Elasticsearch to limit the number of threads (for
example, in Docker containers). A new feature was added to Netty that
enables configuring the number of processors Netty should see for sizing
this various resources. This commit takes advantage of this feature to
set this number of available processors to be equal to the configured
number of processors set in Elasticsearch.

is because this method ultimately uses the random ASCII methods from

This commit enforces the requirement of Content-Type for the REST layer and removes the deprecated methods in transport
requests and their usages.
While doing this, it turns out that there are many places where *Entity classes are used from the apache http client
libraries and many of these usages did not specify the content type. The methods that do not specify a content type
explicitly have been added to forbidden apis to prevent more of these from entering our code base.
Relates #19388
This change adds a strict mode for xcontent parsing on the rest layer. The strict mode will be off by default for 5.x and in a separate commit will be enabled by default for 6.0. The strict mode, which can be enabled by setting `http.content_type.required: true` in 5.x, will require that all incoming rest requests have a valid and supported content type header before the request is dispatched. In the non-strict mode, the Content-Type header will be inspected and if it is not present or not valid, we will continue with auto detection of content like we have done previously.
The content type header is parsed to the matching XContentType value with the only exception being for plain text requests. This value is then passed on with the content bytes so that we can reduce the number of places where we need to auto-detect the content type.
As part of this, many transport requests and builders were updated to provide methods that
accepted the XContentType along with the bytes and the methods that would rely on auto-detection have been deprecated.
In the non-strict mode, deprecation warnings are issued whenever a request with body doesn't provide the Content-Type header.
See #19388
There are presently 7 ctor args used in any rest handlers:
* `Settings`: Every handler uses it to initialize a logger and
some other strange things.
* `RestController`: Every handler registers itself with it.
* `ClusterSettings`: Used by `RestClusterGetSettingsAction` to
render the default values for cluster settings.
* `IndexScopedSettings`: Used by `RestGetSettingsAction` to get
the default values for index settings.
* `SettingsFilter`: Used by a few handlers to filter returned
settings so we don't expose stuff like passwords.
* `IndexNameExpressionResolver`: Used by `_cat/indices` to
filter the list of indices.
* `Supplier<DiscoveryNodes>`: Used to fill enrich the response
by handlers that list tasks.
We probably want to reduce these arguments over time but
switching construction away from guice gives us tighter
control over the list of available arguments.
These parameters are passed to plugins using
`ActionPlugin#initRestHandlers` which is expected to build and
return that handlers immediately. This felt simpler than
returning an reference to the ctors given all the different
possible args.
Breaks java plugins by moving rest handlers off of guice.
This commit adds a MessyRestTestPlugin to the gradle build. It extends
StandaloneRestTestPlugin. The main piece of functionality that it adds
is to copy plugin-metadata from dependencies into the
generated-resources for the current test source. This is necessary to
ensure that permissions for dependencies are applied when running the
tests.
A current limitation is that the permissions are applied differently
than in the distribution sources. When permissions are granted to all
depedencies for a module or plugin, the permissions are granted to all
dependencies on the classpath for tests besides a few hardcoded
exclusions:
- es core
- es test framework
- lucene test framework
- randomized runner
- junit library
Moves the last of the "easy" parser construction into
`RestRequest`, this time with a new method
`RestRequest#contentParser`. The rest of the production
code that builds `XContentParser` isn't "easy" because it is
exposed in the Transport Client API (a Builder) object.
Our query DSL supports empty queries (`{}`), which have a different meaning depending on the query that holds it, either ignored, match_all or match_none. We deprecated the support for empty queries in 5.0, where we log a deprecation warning wherever they are used.
The way we supported it once we moved query parsing to the coordinating node was having an Optional<QueryBuilder> return type in all of our parse methods (called fromXContent). See #17624. The central place for this was QueryParseContext#parseInnerQueryBuilder. We can now remove all the optional return types and simply throw an exception whenever an empty query is found.
Action filters currently have the ability to filter both the request and
response. But the response side was not actually used. This change
removes support for filtering responses with action filters.
We don't use the test infra nor do we run the tests. They might all be
entirely out of date. We also have a different BWC test infra in-place.
This change removes all of the legacy infra.
We kept `netty_3` as a fallback in the 5.x series but now that master
is 6.0 we don't need this or in other words all issues coming up with
netty 4 will be blockers for 6.0.
Today when parsing a request, Elasticsearch silently ignores incorrect
(including parameters with typos) or unused parameters. This is bad as
it leads to requests having unintended behavior (e.g., if a user hits
the _analyze API and misspell the "tokenizer" then Elasticsearch will
just use the standard analyzer, completely against intentions).
This commit removes lenient URL parameter parsing. The strategy is
simple: when a request is handled and a parameter is touched, we mark it
as such. Before the request is actually executed, we check to ensure
that all parameters have been consumed. If there are remaining
parameters yet to be consumed, we fail the request with a list of the
unconsumed parameters. An exception has to be made for parameters that
format the response (as opposed to controlling the request); for this
case, handlers are able to provide a list of parameters that should be
excluded from tripping the unconsumed parameters check because those
parameters will be used in formatting the response.
Additionally, some inconsistencies between the parameters in the code
and in the docs are corrected.
