This PR adds deprecation warnings when accessing System Indices via the REST layer. At this time, these warnings are only enabled for Snapshot builds by default, to allow projects external to Elasticsearch additional time to adjust their access patterns.
Deprecation warnings will be triggered by all REST requests which access registered System Indices, except for purpose-specific APIs which access System Indices as an implementation detail a few specific APIs which will continue to allow access to system indices by default:
- `GET _cluster/health`
- `GET {index}/_recovery`
- `GET _cluster/allocation/explain`
- `GET _cluster/state`
- `POST _cluster/reroute`
- `GET {index}/_stats`
- `GET {index}/_segments`
- `GET {index}/_shard_stores`
- `GET _cat/[indices,aliases,health,recovery,shards,segments]`
Deprecation warnings for accessing system indices take the form:
```
this request accesses system indices: [.some_system_index], but in a future major version, direct access to system indices will be prevented by default
```
Backport #63182 to 7.x branch.
The `randomEnrichPolicy(...)` helper method stores the policy and creates the source indices.
If a source index already exists, because it was creates for a random policy created earlier then
skipping the source index fails, but that is ignored and the test continues. However if the policy
has a match field that doesn't exist in the previous random policy then the mapping is never updated
and the put policy api fails with the fact that the match field can't be found.
This pr fixes that by execute a put mapping call in the event that the source index already exists.
Closes#63126
This commit adds a dedicated threadpool for system index write
operations. The dedicated resources for system index writes serves as
a means to ensure that user activity does not block important system
operations from occurring such as the management of users and roles.
Backport of #61655
This was missing and caused nodes to drop out of the cluster on serialization failures
when ever one tried to get an enrich policy task by name.
The test in here is a little dirty but I figured it would be nice to have an actual reproducer
for the issue and I couldn't find any infrastructure to nicely time the tasks so I put this on
top of existing test infra.
When calling `_execute` there is a chance that there will be bulk indexing failures
or search failures.
These will result in the call failing overall. But, no information is provided for troubleshooting the failure.
This commit adds logging to indicate the number of failures, and new debug level logging so that
failure details can be determined if necessary.

This commit removes `integTest` task from all es-plugins.
Most relevant projects have been converted to use yamlRestTest, javaRestTest,
or internalClusterTest in prior PRs.
A few projects needed to be adjusted to allow complete removal of this task
* x-pack/plugin - converted to use yamlRestTest and javaRestTest
* plugins/repository-hdfs - kept the integTest task, but use `rest-test` plugin to define the task
* qa/die-with-dignity - convert to javaRestTest
* x-pack/qa/security-example-spi-extension - convert to javaRestTest
* multiple projects - remove the integTest.enabled = false (yay!)

For 1/2 the plugins in x-pack, the integTest
task is now a no-op and all of the tests are now executed via a test,
yamlRestTest, javaRestTest, or internalClusterTest.
This includes the following projects:
async-search, autoscaling, ccr, enrich, eql, frozen-indicies,
data-streams, graph, ilm, mapper-constant-keyword, mapper-flattened, ml
A few of the more specialized qa projects within these plugins
have not been changed with this PR due to additional complexity which should
be addressed separately.
A follow up PR will address the remaining x-pack plugins (this PR is big enough as-is).

This commit does three things:
* Removes all Copyright/license headers for the build.gradle files under x-pack. (implicit Apache license)
* Removes evaluationDependsOn(xpackModule('core')) from build.gradle files under x-pack
* Removes a place holder test in favor of disabling the test task (in the async plugin)
This commit continues on the work in #59801 and makes other
implementors of the LocalNodeMasterListener interface thread safe in
that they will no longer allow the callbacks to run on different
threads and possibly race each other. This also helps address other
issues where these events could be queued to wait for execution while
the service keeps moving forward thinking it is the master even when
that is not the case.
In order to accomplish this, the LocalNodeMasterListener no longer has
the executorName() method to prevent future uses that could encounter
this surprising behavior.
Each use was inspected and if the class was also a
ClusterStateListener, the implementation of LocalNodeMasterListener
was removed in favor of a single listener that combined the logic. A
single listener is used and there is currently no guarantee on execution
order between ClusterStateListeners and LocalNodeMasterListeners,
so a future change there could cause undesired consequences. For other
classes, the implementations of the callbacks were inspected and if the
operations were lightweight, the overriden executorName method was
removed to use the default, which runs on the same thread.
Backport of #59932
This commit creates a new Gradle plugin to provide a separate task name
and source set for running YAML based REST tests. The only project
converted to use the new plugin in this PR is distribution/archives/integ-test-zip.
For which the testing has been moved to :rest-api-spec since it makes the most
sense and it avoids a small but awkward change to the distribution plugin.
The remaining cases in modules, plugins, and x-pack will be handled in followups.
This plugin is distinctly different from the plugin introduced in #55896 since
the YAML REST tests are intended to be black box tests over HTTP. As such they
should not (by default) have access to the classpath for that which they are testing.
The YAML based REST tests will be moved to separate source sets (yamlRestTest).
The which source is the target for the test resources is dependent on if this
new plugin is applied. If it is not applied, it will default to the test source
set.
Further, this introduces a breaking change for plugin developers that
use the YAML testing framework. They will now need to either use the new source set
and matching task, or configure the rest resources to use the old "test" source set that
matches the old integTest task. (The former should be preferred).
As part of this change (which is also breaking for plugin developers) the
rest resources plugin has been removed from the build plugin and now requires
either explicit application or application via the new YAML REST test plugin.
Plugin developers should be able to fix the breaking changes to the YAML tests
by adding apply plugin: 'elasticsearch.yaml-rest-test' and moving the YAML tests
under a yamlRestTest folder (instead of test)
The checks on the license state have a singular method, isAllowed, that
returns whether the given feature is allowed by the current license.
However, there are two classes of usages, one which intends to actually
use a feature, and another that intends to return in telemetry whether
the feature is allowed. When feature usage tracking is added, the latter
case should not count as a "usage", so this commit reworks the calls to
isAllowed into 2 methods, checkFeature, which will (eventually) both
check whether a feature is allowed, and keep track of the last usage
time, and isAllowed, which simply determines whether the feature is
allowed.
Note that I considered having a boolean flag on the current method, but
wanted the additional clarity that a different method name provides,
versus a boolean flag which is more easily copied without realizing what
the flag means since it is nameless in call sites.
* Replace compile configuration usage with api (#58451)
- Use java-library instead of plugin to allow api configuration usage
- Remove explicit references to runtime configurations in dependency declarations
- Make test runtime classpath input for testing convention
- required as java library will by default not have build jar file
- jar file is now explicit input of the task and gradle will ensure its properly build
* Fix compile usages in 7.x branch
The remote_monitoring_user user needs to access the enrich stats API.
But the request is denied because the API is categorized under admin.
The correct privilege should be monitor.
Today we have individual settings for configuring node roles such as
node.data and node.master. Additionally, roles are pluggable and we have
used this to introduce roles such as node.ml and node.voting_only. As
the number of roles is growing, managing these becomes harder for the
user. For example, to create a master-only node, today a user has to
configure:
- node.data: false
- node.ingest: false
- node.remote_cluster_client: false
- node.ml: false
at a minimum if they are relying on defaults, but also add:
- node.master: true
- node.transform: false
- node.voting_only: false
If they want to be explicit. This is also challenging in cases where a
user wants to have configure a coordinating-only node which requires
disabling all roles, a list which we are adding to, requiring the user
to keep checking whether a node has acquired any of these roles.
This commit addresses this by adding a list setting node.roles for which
a user has explicit control over the list of roles that a node has. If
the setting is configured, the node has exactly the roles in the list,
and not any additional roles. This means to configure a master-only
node, the setting is merely 'node.roles: [master]', and to configure a
coordinating-only node, the setting is merely: 'node.roles: []'.
With this change we deprecate the existing 'node.*' settings such as
'node.data'.
This commit adds an optional field, `description`, to all ingest processors
so that users can explain the purpose of the specific processor instance.

This PR removes the blocking call to insert ingest documents into a queue in the
coordinator. It replaces it with an offer call which will throw a rejection exception
in the event that the queue is full. This prevents deadlocks of the write threads
when the queue fills to capacity and there are more than one enrich processors
in a pipeline.
In some cases the Enrich processor factory may be called before it is
ready to create processors. While these calls are usually made in error,
the response from the Enrich processor is an NPE which is almost always
an unhelpful error when debugging an issue.
The following settings are now no-ops:
* xpack.flattened.enabled
* xpack.logstash.enabled
* xpack.rollup.enabled
* xpack.slm.enabled
* xpack.sql.enabled
* xpack.transform.enabled
* xpack.vectors.enabled
Since these settings no longer need to be checked, we can remove settings
parameters from a number of constructors and methods, and do so in this
commit.
We also update documentation to remove references to these settings.
This commit converts the remaining isXXXAllowed methods to instead of
use isAllowed with a Feature value. There are a couple other methods
that are static, as well as some licensed features that check the
license directly, but those will be dealt with in other followups.
We believe there's no longer a need to be able to disable basic-license
features completely using the "xpack.*.enabled" settings. If users don't
want to use those features, they simply don't need to use them. Having
such features always available lets us build more complex features that
assume basic-license features are present.
This commit deprecates settings of the form "xpack.*.enabled" for
basic-license features, excluding "security", which is a special case.
It also removes deprecated settings from integration tests and unit
tests where they're not directly relevant; e.g. monitoring and ILM are
no longer disabled in many integration tests.
Today we pass the `RepositoriesService` to the searchable snapshots plugin
during the initialization of the `RepositoryModule`, forcing the plugin to be a
`RepositoryPlugin` even though it does not implement any repositories.
After discussion we decided it best for now to pass this in via
`Plugin#createComponents` instead, pending some future work in which plugins
can depend on services more dynamically.
The isAuthAllowed() method for license checking is used by code that
wants to ensure security is both enabled and available. The enabled
state is dynamic and provided by isSecurityEnabled(). But since security
is available with all license types, an check on the license level is
not necessary. Thus, this change replaces isAuthAllowed() with calling
isSecurityEnabled().
This change reintroduces the system index APIs for Kibana without the
changes made for marking what system indices could be accessed using
these APIs. In essence, this is a partial revert of #53912. The changes
for marking what system indices should be allowed access will be
handled in a separate change.
The APIs introduced here are wrapped versions of the existing REST
endpoints. A new setting is also introduced since the Kibana system
indices' names are allowed to be changed by a user in case multiple
instances of Kibana use the same instance of Elasticsearch.

This is a simple naming change PR, to fix the fact that "metadata" is a
single English word, and for too long we have not followed general
naming conventions for it. We are also not consistent about it, for
example, METADATA instead of META_DATA if we were trying to be
consistent with MetaData (although METADATA is correct when considered
in the context of "metadata"). This was a simple find and replace across
the code base, only taking a few minutes to fix this naming issue
forever.

In order to prepare the `AliasOrIndex` abstraction for the introduction of data streams,
the abstraction needs to be made more flexible, because currently it really can be only
an alias or an index.
* Renamed `AliasOrIndex` to `IndexAbstraction`.
* Introduced a `IndexAbstraction.Type` enum to indicate what a `IndexAbstraction` instance is.
* Replaced the `isAlias()` method that returns a boolean with the `getType()` method that returns the new Type enum.
* Moved `getWriteIndex()` up from the `IndexAbstraction.Alias` to the `IndexAbstraction` interface.
* Moved `getAliasName()` up from the `IndexAbstraction.Alias` to the `IndexAbstraction` interface and renamed it to `getName()`.
* Removed unnecessary casting to `IndexAbstraction.Alias` by just checking the `getType()` method.

This commit causes negative TimeValues, other than -1 which is sometimes used as
a sentinel value, to be rejected during parsing.
Also introduces a hack to allow ILM to load policies which were written to the
cluster state with a negative min_age, treating those values as 0, which should
match the behavior of prior versions.
This commit introduces a module for Kibana that exposes REST APIs that
will be used by Kibana for access to its system indices. These APIs are wrapped
versions of the existing REST endpoints. A new setting is also introduced since
the Kibana system indices' names are allowed to be changed by a user in case
multiple instances of Kibana use the same instance of Elasticsearch.
Additionally, the ThreadContext has been extended to indicate that the use of
system indices may be allowed in a request. This will be built upon in the future
for the protection of system indices.

* Smarter copying of the rest specs and tests (#52114)
This PR addresses the unnecessary copying of the rest specs and allows
for better semantics for which specs and tests are copied. By default
the rest specs will get copied if the project applies
`elasticsearch.standalone-rest-test` or `esplugin` and the project
has rest tests or you configure the custom extension `restResources`.
This PR also removes the need for dozens of places where the x-pack
specs were copied by supporting copying of the x-pack rest specs too.
The plugin/task introduced here can also copy the rest tests to the
local project through a similar configuration.
The new plugin/task allows a user to minimize the surface area of
which rest specs are copied. Per project can be configured to include
only a subset of the specs (or tests). Configuring a project to only
copy the specs when actually needed should help with build cache hit
rates since we can better define what is actually in use.
However, project level optimizations for build cache hit rates are
not included with this PR.
Also, with this PR you can no longer use the includePackaged flag on
integTest task.
The following items are included in this PR:
* new plugin: `elasticsearch.rest-resources`
* new tasks: CopyRestApiTask and CopyRestTestsTask - performs the copy
* new extension 'restResources'
```
restResources {
restApi {
includeCore 'foo' , 'bar' //will include the core specs that start with foo and bar
includeXpack 'baz' //will include x-pack specs that start with baz
}
restTests {
includeCore 'foo', 'bar' //will include the core tests that start with foo and bar
includeXpack 'baz' //will include the x-pack tests that start with baz
}
}
Don't rely on the delete index api to resolve all the enrich indices for a particular enrich policy using a '[policy_name]-*' wildcard expression. With this change, the delete policy api will resolve the indices to remove and pass that directly to the delete index api.
This resolves a bug, that if `action.destructive_requires_name` setting has been set to true then the delete policy api is unable to remove the enrich indices related to the policy being deleted.
This commit changes how RestHandlers are registered with the
RestController so that a RestHandler no longer needs to register itself
with the RestController. Instead the RestHandler interface has new
methods which when called provide information about the routes
(method and path combinations) that are handled by the handler
including any deprecated and/or replaced combinations.
This change also makes the publication of RestHandlers safe since they
no longer publish a reference to themselves within their constructors.
This commit deprecates the creation of dot-prefixed index names (e.g.
a plugin that extends SystemIndexPlugin. This is the first step
