Currently the thirdPartyAudit task is failing for the test:framework module after renaming to OpenSearch. We have created an issue and temporarily suppressed the errors to unblock the precommit.
Issue: https://github.com/opensearch-project/OpenSearch/issues/420

This commit fixes the currently broken gradle build resulted from the renaming work. It reverts a few dependencies and comments out the `opensearch_distibutions` task which is currently failing for some builds. We will address these separately in the future once we have a working build.

This commit refactors the remaining o.e.index and o.e.test packages in the
test/fixtures module. References throughout the codebase are also refactored.

This commit adds external test modules. These are modules meant for
external systems to test edge cases in elasticsearch, but only within
snapshots. They are not meant to be used in production, so protections
are also added from their accidental inclusion in release builds.
Note that this commit does not actually add any new modules, it only
adds the infrastructure for the new modules, under
`test/external-modules`.
- Replace immediate task creations by using task avoidance api
- One step closer to #56610
- Still many tasks are created during configuration phase. Tackled in separate steps
* Replace compile configuration usage with api (#58451)
- Use java-library instead of plugin to allow api configuration usage
- Remove explicit references to runtime configurations in dependency declarations
- Make test runtime classpath input for testing convention
- required as java library will by default not have build jar file
- jar file is now explicit input of the task and gradle will ensure its properly build
* Fix compile usages in 7.x branch
Currently forbidden apis accounts for 800+ tasks in the build. These
tasks are aggressively created by the plugin. In forbidden apis 3.0, we
will get task avoidance
(https://github.com/policeman-tools/forbidden-apis/pull/162), but we
need to ourselves use the same task avoidance mechanisms to not trigger
these task creations. This commit does that for our foribdden apis
usages, in preparation for upgrading to 3.0 when it is released.
Backport of #48849. Update `.editorconfig` to make the Java settings the
default for all files, and then apply a 2-space indent to all `*.gradle`
files. Then reformat all the files.
The test FW has a method to check that it's implementation of getting
index and wire compatible versions as well as reasoning about which
version is released or not produces the same rezults as the simillar
implementation in the build.
This PR adds the `verifyVersions` task to the test FW so we have one
task to check everything related to versions.
We had this as a dependency for legacy dependencies that still needed
the Log4j 1.2 API. This appears to no longer be necessary, so this
commit removes this artifact as a dependency.
To remove this dependency, we had to fix a few places where we were
accidentally relying on Log4j 1.2 instead of Log4j 2 (easy to do, since
both APIs were on the compile-time classpath).
Finally, we can remove our custom Netty logger factory. This was needed
when we were on Log4j 1.2 and handled logging in our own unique
way. When we migrated to Log4j 2 we could have dropped this
dependency. However, even then Netty would still pick up Log4j 1.2 since
it was on the classpath, thus the advantage to removing this as a
dependency now.
hamcrest has some improvements in newer versions, like FileMatchers
that make assertions regarding file exists cleaner. This commit upgrades
to the latest version of hamcrest so we can start using new and improved
matchers.
* Replace usages RandomizedTestingTask with built-in Gradle Test (#40978)
This commit replaces the existing RandomizedTestingTask and supporting code with Gradle's built-in JUnit support via the Test task type. Additionally, the previous workaround to disable all tasks named "test" and create new unit testing tasks named "unitTest" has been removed such that the "test" task now runs unit tests as per the normal Gradle Java plugin conventions.

* Fix forking JVM runner
* Don't bump shadow plugin version
Many gradle projects specifically use the -try exclude flag, because
there are many cases where auto-closeable resource ignore is never
referenced in body of corresponding try statement. Suppressing this
warning specifically in each case that it happens using
`@SuppressWarnings("try")` would be very verbose.
This change removes `-try` from any gradle project and adds it to the
build plugin. Also this change removes exclude flags from gradle projects
that is already specified in build plugin (for example -deprecation).
Relates to #40366
* Testing conventions now checks for tests in main
This is the last outstanding feature of the old NamingConventionsTask,
so time to remove it.
* PR review
Closes#35435
- make it easier to add additional testing tasks with the proper configuration and add some where they were missing.
- mute or fix failing tests
- add a check as part of testing conventions to find classes not included in any testing task.
* Introduce property to set version qualifier
- VersionProperties.elasticsearch is now a string which can have qualifier
and snapshot too
- The Version class in the build no longer cares about snapshot and
qualifier.
This commit fixes existing uses of forbidden apis in the test framework
and re-enables the forbidden apis check. It was previously completely
disabled and had missed a rename of the forbidden apis signatures files.

Allows users of the Low Level REST client to specify which hosts a
request should be run on. They implement the `NodeSelector` interface
or reuse a built in selector like `NOT_MASTER_ONLY` to chose which nodes
are valid. Using it looks like:
```
Request request = new Request("POST", "/foo/_search");
RequestOptions options = request.getOptions().toBuilder();
options.setNodeSelector(NodeSelector.NOT_MASTER_ONLY);
request.setOptions(options);
...
```
This introduces a new `Node` object which contains a `HttpHost` and the
metadata about the host. At this point that metadata is just `version`
and `roles` but I plan to add node attributes in a followup. The
canonical way to **get** this metadata is to use the `Sniffer` to pull
the information from the Elasticsearch cluster.
I've marked this as "breaking-java" because it breaks custom
implementations of `HostsSniffer` by renaming the interface to
`NodesSniffer` and by changing it from returning a `List<HttpHost>` to a
`List<Node>`. It *shouldn't* break anyone else though.
Because we expect to find it useful, this also implements `host_selector`
support to `do` statements in the yaml tests. Using it looks a little
like:
```
---
"example test":
- skip:
features: host_selector
- do:
host_selector:
version: " - 7.0.0" # same syntax as skip
apiname:
something: true
```
The `do` section parses the `version` string into a host selector that
uses the same version comparison logic as the `skip` section. When the
`do` section is executed it passed the off to the `RestClient`, using
the `ElasticsearchHostsSniffer` to sniff the required metadata.
The idea is to use this in mixed version tests to target a specific
version of Elasticsearch so we can be sure about the deprecation
logging though we don't currently have any examples that need it. We do,
however, have at least one open pull request that requires something
like this to properly test it.
Closes#21888
Generalizing BWC building so that there is less code to modify for a release. This ensures we do not
need to think about what major or minor version is in the gradle code. It follows the general rules of the
elastic release structure. For more information on the rules, see the VersionCollection's javadoc.
This also removes the additional bwc snapshots that will never be released, such as 6.0.2, which were
being built and tested against every time we ran bwc tests.
Additionally, it creates 4 new projects that correspond to the different types of snapshots that may exist
for a given version. Its possible to now run those individual tasks to work out bwc logic whereas
previously it was impossible and the entire suite of bwc tests had to be run to work out any logic
changes in the build tools' bwc project. Please note that if the project does not make sense for the
version that is current, that an error will be thrown from that individual project if an attempt is made to
run it.
This should allow for automating the version bumps as well, since it removes all the hardcoded version
logic from the configs.
* Adds task dependenciesInfo to BuildPlugin to generate a CSV file with dependencies information (name,version,url,license)
* Adds `ConcatFilesTask.groovy` to concatenates multiple files into one
* Adds task `:distribution:generateDependenciesReport` to concatenate `dependencies.csv` files into a single file (`es-dependencies.csv` by default)
# Examples:
$ gradle dependenciesInfo :distribution:generateDependenciesReport
## Use `csv` system property to customize the output file path
$ gradle dependenciesInfo :distribution:generateDependenciesReport -Dcsv=/tmp/elasticsearch-dependencies.csv
## When branch is not master, use `build.branch` system property to generate correct licenses URLs
$ gradle dependenciesInfo :distribution:generateDependenciesReport -Dbuild.branch=6.x -Dcsv=/tmp/elasticsearch-dependencies.csv
This is related to #27802. This commit adds a jar called
elasticsearch-nio that contains the base nio classes that will be used
for the tcp nio transport and eventually the http nio transport.
The jar does not depend on elasticsearch:core, so all references to core
have been removed.
Projects the depend on the CLI currently depend on core. This should not
always be the case. The EnvironmentAwareCommand will remain in :core,
but the rest of the CLI components have been moved into their own
subproject of :core, :core:cli.
The client sniffer depends on the low-level REST client, while the Java high-level REST client and the transport client depend on Elasticsearch itself. Javadoc are not that useful unless they have links to the Elasticsearch classes in the latter case, and to the low-level REST client in the sniffer javadoc. This commit adds those links.
This commit removes all external dependencies from the rest client jar
and shades them in an 'org.elasticsearch.client' package within the jar
using shadowJar gradle plugin. All projects that depended on the
existing jar have been converted to using the 'org.elasticsearch.client'
package prefixes to interact with the rest client.
Closes#25208
It was brought up that our current client artifacts have generic names like 'rest' that may cause conflicts with other artifacts.
This commit renames:
- rest -> elasticsearch-rest-client
- sniffer -> elasticsearch-rest-client-sniffer
- rest-high-level -> elasticsearch-rest-high-level-client
A couple of small changes are also preparing the high level client for its first release.
Closes#20248
Both gradle and java code attempt to infer the type of a each
Version constant in Version.java. It is super important that
they infer that each constant has the same type. If they disagree
we might accidentally not be testing backwards compatibility for
some version.
This adds a test to make sure that they agree, modulo known and
accepted differences (mostly around alphas). It also changes the
minimum wire compatible version from the released 5.4.0 to the
unreleased 5.5.0 as that lines up with the gradle logic.
Relates to #24798
Note that the gradle and java version logic doesn't actually match so
this contains a hack to make it *look* like it matches. Since this is a
start, I'm merging it and going to work on some followups to make the
logic actually match.....
Creates a new task `namingConventionsMain`, that runs on the
`buildSrc` and `test:framework` projects and fails the build if
any of the classes in the main artifacts are named like tests or
are non-abstract subclasses of ESTestCase.
It also fixes the three tests that would cause it to fail.
This integrates the mocksocket jar with elasticsearch tests. Mocksocket wraps actions requiring SocketPermissions in doPrivilege blocks. This will eventually allow SocketPermissions to be assigned to the mocksocket jar opposed to the entire elasticsearch codebase.
:client ---------> :client:rest
:client-sniffer -> :client:sniffer
:client-test ----> :client:test
This lines the client up with how we do things like modules and
plugins.
1. Uses forbidden patterns to prevent things from referencing
java.io.Serializable or from mentioning serialVersionUID.
2. Uses -Xlint:-serial so we don't have to hear from javac that we aren't
declaring serialVersionUID on any classes that we make that happen to extend
Serializable.
3. Remove Serializable and serialVersionUID declarations.
I didn't use forbidden apis because it doesn't look like it has a way to ban
explicitly implementing Serializable. If you try to ban Serializable with
forbidden apis you end up banning all Exceptions and all Strings.
Closes#15847
* Added percolator field mapper that extracts the query terms and indexes these terms with the percolator query.
* At percolate time these extracted terms are used to query percolator queries that are like to be evaluated. This can significantly cut down the time it takes to percolate. Whereas before all percolator queries were evaluated if they matches with the document being percolated.
* Changes made to percolator queries are no longer immediately visible, a refresh needs to happen before the changes are visible.
* By default the percolate api only returns upto 10 matches instead of returning all matching percolator queries.
* Made percolate more modular, so that it is easier to add unit tests.
* Added unit tests for the percolator.

This change adds a Fixture class for use by gradle. A Fixture is an
external process that integration tests will use. It can be added as a
dependsOn for integTest, and will automatically be shutdown upon success
or failure, as well as relevant information dumped on failure. There is
also an example fixture in this change.
