we apply some rework on how we handle distributions in our test cluster setups:
- If no custom modules, plugins or extra jar files are declared we do not create a cluster
specific distro folder and use the origin distribution folder instead.
- If a custom distribution folder is required, we fallback to file copy when hard linking
is not supported
Access the common versions map is done in a lot of places. While it can
be access through an import of VersionProperties, the vast majority of
places use it through the provided convenience property added by
BuildPlugin. This commit moves that convenience property to the base
java plugin, so further reduce dependence on the BuildPlugin.
Backport of #60742.
This PR resurrects support for building Docker images based on one of
Red Hat's UBI images. It also adds support for running the existing
Docker tests against the image. The image is named
`elasticsearch-ubi8:<version>`.
I also changed the Docker build file uses enums instead strings in a lot
of places, for added rigour.

With Gradle 6.6 we can now use the native support for the --release compile options.
As Gradle by default resolves the compatibility version from the release property we needed to workaround this in order to keep our current setup. An issue was raised at gradle to track this at https://github.com/gradle/gradle/issues/14141
The reaper is used only when spawned processes by the build like
testclusters or vagrant are left behind in a failed build. When this
occurs on Windows, the Taskkill command is used. However, there was a
typo in the command name. Since the reaper is for edgecases and mostly
protection for local builds (CI uses immutable hosts), this has been
broken since its inception.

The Elasticsearch `run` task in Gradle is backed by testclusters
spinning up a node and waiting indefinitely on output from that node.
However, this thread currently waits for an interrupt to exit. If
Elasticsearch fails to start, we hang indefinitely. This commit adds a
check after each poll of the process stdout to see if it is still alive,
and fails the build if it has died.

Though bats tests were recently removed, there remains a few unnecessary
setups needed for those tests in our vagrant files, as well as CI setup.
Additionally, we no longer rely on the vagrant images setting a
JAVA_HOME, instead relying on DistroTestPlugin to pull the appropriate
jdk when testing with no-jdk distributions.
* Simplify jdk downloads via artifact transforms
This reworks the jdk download plugin to use artifact transforms.
That allows us to simplify the jdk download plugin by a lot. The
benefits of using artifact transforms are:
- they transform an artifact to an upacked folder on the fly as part
of the dependenc resolution allowing us to remove all the custom created unpack tasks
and configurations
- Artifact transforms support gradle build cache. Requesting a jdk folder on a clean machine
will likely be resolved from the build cache
- The manual mingling about not extracting jdks multiple times by all jdks channeling through
root project configurations can be removed as they support up-to-date checking and build cache
which will ensure these archives are only resolved once per build at max.
Also the test coverage has been ported to Spock that supports data driven testing. This porting
includes an introduction to a wiremock fixture that can be used later on for mocking repository
urls in other integration tests
* Simplify artifact transform registration
* Change jdk finalization and repository setup
Jdk finalization is now done via `configuration.defaultDependencies`.
This has two benefits:
- we only configure and finalize the JDKs we actually use during the build
- afterEvaluate hooks are problematic in combination with task avoidance api.
Relying on task avoidance api in Gradle moves more configuration logic into the materialization
of tasks which is, with task avoidance api, is done ideally during the task graph calculation.
Anything created (e.g. jdks) created late in this task graph calculation would never be finalized
via afterEvaluate hooks as this has been fired before already with the jdk not there yet.
Furthermore we now only configure repositories in the projects where the jdk is declared
(aka the jdk-download plugin is applied) and only if the jdk is actually requested during the build.
* Fix javadoc
* Fix jdk download repo content filtering
* Minor cleanup
* Apply review feedback and cleanup
This commit removes the last of the bats tests, converting the rpm/deb
upgrade tests to java. It adds a new pattern of tasks, similar in nature
but separate from the existing distro tests, named `distroUpgradeTest`.
For each index compatible version, a `distroUpgradeTest.VERSION` task
exxists. Each distribution then has a task, named
`distroUpgradeTest.VERSION.DISTRO`.
One thing to note is these new tests do not cover no-jdk versions of
the rpm/deb packages, since the distribution/bwc project does not
currently build those.

For all OSS plugins (except repository-* and discovery-*) integTest
task is now a no-op and all of the tests are now executed via a test,
yamlRestTest, javaRestTest, or internalClusterTest.
This commit does NOT convert the discovery-* and repository-* since they
are bit more complex then the rest of tests and this PR is large enough.
Those plugins will be addressed in a future PR(s).
This commit also fixes a minor issue that did not copy the rest api
for projects that only had YAML TEST tests.
related: #56841
This commit adds compatibility testing of our JDBC driver against
different Elasticsearch versions. Although we are really testing the
forwards compatibility nature of the JDBC driver we model the testing
the same as we do existing BWC tests, that is, with the current branch
fetching the earlier versions of the artifact that is to be tested. In
this case, that's the JDBC driver itself.
Because the tests include the JDBC driver jar on it's classpath we had
to change the packaging of the driver jar in order to avoid jarhell and
other conflicting dependency issues when using an old JDBC driver with
later branches. For this we simply relocate all driver dependencies in
the shadow jar under a "shadowed" package. This allows the JDBC driver
to use the correct version of Elasticsearch libs classes, while the
tests themselves use their versions. Since this required a change to the
driver jar compatibility testing can only go back as far as that version
which at the time of this commit is 7.8.1.
Introduce a javaRestTest source set and task to compliment the yamlRestTest.
javaRestTest differs such that the code is sourced from Java and may have
different dependencies and setup requirements for the test clusters. This also
allows the tests to run in parallel in different cluster instances to prevent any
cross test contamination between the two types of tests.
Included in this PR is all :modules no longer use the integTest task. The tests
are now driven by test, yamlRestTest, javaRestTest, and internalClusterTest.
Since only :modules (and :rest-api-spec) have been converted to yamlRestTest
we can now disable the integTest task if either yamlRestTest or javaRestTest have
been applied. Once all projects are converted, we can delete the integTest task.

Precommit is setup to run as a dependency of the check task, but
unfortunately this wiring was only happening when the java plugin (but
not java-base plugin) was applied. This commit moves the wiring to occur
whenever the check task exists, which is with the lifecycle-base plugin.

seems to require this. We need to revisit the classpath declarations in detail

In 7.x, we have java 8 as minimum jdk version. In the past, for
packaging tests, we relied on the system to provide an alternative jdk
to be used by the no-jdk distributions. Master switched to using a build
provided jdk, but 7.x was stuck relying on the system because it needed
a java 8 jdk. The jdk download plugin was updated a while ago to support
jdk 8, and so this PR converts the distro tests to use the build
provided jdk just as master branch does.
Note also this fixes a failure that would sometimes occur on older jdks
in windows where the expected gc filename can be different.
This commit creates a new Gradle plugin to provide a separate task name
and source set for running YAML based REST tests. The only project
converted to use the new plugin in this PR is distribution/archives/integ-test-zip.
For which the testing has been moved to :rest-api-spec since it makes the most
sense and it avoids a small but awkward change to the distribution plugin.
The remaining cases in modules, plugins, and x-pack will be handled in followups.
This plugin is distinctly different from the plugin introduced in #55896 since
the YAML REST tests are intended to be black box tests over HTTP. As such they
should not (by default) have access to the classpath for that which they are testing.
The YAML based REST tests will be moved to separate source sets (yamlRestTest).
The which source is the target for the test resources is dependent on if this
new plugin is applied. If it is not applied, it will default to the test source
set.
Further, this introduces a breaking change for plugin developers that
use the YAML testing framework. They will now need to either use the new source set
and matching task, or configure the rest resources to use the old "test" source set that
matches the old integTest task. (The former should be preferred).
As part of this change (which is also breaking for plugin developers) the
rest resources plugin has been removed from the build plugin and now requires
either explicit application or application via the new YAML REST test plugin.
Plugin developers should be able to fix the breaking changes to the YAML tests
by adding apply plugin: 'elasticsearch.yaml-rest-test' and moving the YAML tests
under a yamlRestTest folder (instead of test)

Previously we had odd issues in CI with vagrant which we attempted to
diagnose by enabling debug logging within our vagrant commands. However,
the debug logging didn't explain anything additional to the failures,
and it is extremely verbose. This commit removes the debug logging.
This commit converts the bats tests for the plugin cli into the java
packaging test framework. The new tests only use the example plugin to
test the plugin cli. The tests for each individual plugin's contents
after being installed are handled by a new unit test for the plugin
installer added in #58287.
If a project is pulling in an external org.elasticsearch dependency, the dependency
report generation would require a license file for the dependency to be present.
This would break precommit because a license was present that it did not feel was
warranted. This un-reverts the update to the dependenciesInfo task, as well as the
JNA license addition.
If an API name (or components of a name) overlaps with a reserved word in
the programming language for an ES client, then it's possible that the code
that is generated from the API will not compile. This PR adds validation to
check for such overlaps.

The shared buildResources task is a catch all for resources needing to

This commit moves the global hook for reporting failed test cases to the
ElasticsearchJavaPlugin. It should always be applied for all java
projects since the Test class is what emits the failures logged.
The gradle version check currently exists in BuildPlugin. However, there
is no reason to check this within every project. Instead, this commit
moves the check to the global build info, which is only applied to the
root project. Additionally, this commit removes the check from buildSrc
because it is not really necessary. The check exists really just for
external plugin authors since we use the gradle wrapper for our own
build.
This commit removes the compiler.java setting from the build. It was
originally added when Gradle was far behind support for the latest jdk,
but is no longer applicable as we don't have any need to update the
supported compile version before gradle supports the newer version. Note
that the runtime version changing support still exists here, this only
ensures we use the same jdk to compile as we use to run gradle.
If an upgraded node is restarted multiple times without flushing a new
index commit, then we will wrongly exclude all commits from the starting
commits. This bug is reproducible with these minimal steps: (1) create
an empty index on 6.1.4 with translog retention disabled, (2) upgrade
the cluster to 7.7.0, (3) restart the upgraded the cluster. The problem
is that with the new translog policy can trim translog without having a
new index commit, while the existing commit still refers to the previous
translog generation.

An ignore parameter was originally added to the ValidateJsonAgainstSchemaTask
to allow the build to pass for REST specs that did not properly validate
against the schema.
Since the introduction of this task, all schemas that did not validate have
been fixed to now validate properly.
This commit removes the ability to ignore specific files for validation. This
allows any consumers the assurance that all REST specs validate against the schema.
This commit moves the common maven repository configuration to the ES
java plugin. All java projects need this common set of repos. Note that
the Elastic download and maven repos are removed, as they are not
necessary anymore since distribution download was split into the
DistributionDownloadPlugin.
Each precommit task is currently registered inside the shared
PrecommitTasks class. Having a single class with all precommit tasks
makes individualizing which precommit tasks are needed based on type of
project difficult, where we often just disable somet tasks eg for all qa
projects. This commit creates plugins for each precommit task, and moves
the configuration of the task into each plugin. PrecommitTasks remains
for now, and just delegates to each plugin, but will be removed in a
future change.
Now that #56526 is merged, we do not need to explicitly disable
the diagnostic trust manager for all of our test clusters - we do
this dynamically in runtime if the combination of java version and
JSSE provider dictates that.
This is another part of the breakup of the massive BuildPlugin. This PR
moves the code for configuring publications to a separate plugin. Most
of the time these publications are jar files, but this also supports the
zip publication we have for integ tests.
We made a small mistake when breaking out the `ESIntegTestCase`

BuildPlugin is a catch all for any elasticsearch common build
infrastructure. Unfortunately that makes reusing parts of it difficult.
This commit splits the parts specific to all java based projects out to
our own elasticsearch.java plugin.
* Simplify java home verification
At one time, all uses of java home were found through the getJavaHome
utility method on BuildPlugin. However, that was changed many
refactorings ago, but the complex support for registering a java home
version needed that fails at configuration time still exists. The only
remaining use of grabbing java home is within bwc tests, and must be at
runtime since that is when we have the checkout and know what version is
needed.
This commit consolidates the java home finding method into a utility
unassociated with BuildPlugin.
* fix checkstyle

This commit adds `runtime.java` as a system property in our

A JSON schema was recently introduced for the REST API specification. #54252
This PR introduces a 3rd party validation tool to ensure that the
REST specification conforms to the schema.
The task is applied to the 3 projects that contain REST API specifications.
The plugin wires this task into the precommit commit task, and should be
considered as part of the public API for the build tools for any plugin
developer to contribute their plugin's specification.
An ignore parameter has been introduced for the task to allow specific
file to be ignored from the validation. The ignored files in this PR
will soon get issues logged and a link so they can be fixed.
Closes#54314
While the current version of forbidden apis still does not support java
14, the warning message has become very noisy as we now require java 14
for the elasticsearch build. This commit replaces the warn log message
with a comment in the code.
The "old jdk" tests are just testing support for downloading from oracle
prior to java 12.0.1, when oracle added a hash to the url. This commit
moves these tests into the openjdk tests (ie oracle download tests),
since adoptopenjdk does not have any change in behavior that needs to be
tested.
The pom files for our published artifacts are sent to maven central
during Elastic's release process, but we may not found out until then
that we have inadvertently broken the pom structure, as has happened
several times before. This commit adds validation of the pom file
specifically for the rules required by maven central.
Currently forbidden apis accounts for 800+ tasks in the build. These
tasks are aggressively created by the plugin. In forbidden apis 3.0, we
will get task avoidance
(https://github.com/policeman-tools/forbidden-apis/pull/162), but we
need to ourselves use the same task avoidance mechanisms to not trigger
these task creations. This commit does that for our foribdden apis
usages, in preparation for upgrading to 3.0 when it is released.
Upgrade to lucene 8.5.1 release that contains a bug fix for a bug that might introduce index corruption when deleting data from an index that was previously shrunk.
Backport of #55073.
We added tasks to build an ARM distribution and Docker image, but didn't
provide any way to run packaging tests against them. Add extra loops on
the possible Architecture values, and skip tasks that can't be run on
the current Architecture.
This change converts the module and plugin parameters
for testClusters to be lazy. Meaning that the values
are not resolved until they are actually used. This
removes the requirement to use project.afterEvaluate to
be able to resolve the bundle artifact.
Note - this does not completely remove the need for afterEvaluate
since it is still needed for the custom resource extension.
The secure_settings_password was never taken into consideration in
the ReloadSecureSettings API. This commit fixes that and adds
necessary REST layer testing. Doing so, it also:
- Allows TestClusters to have a password protected keystore
so that it can be set for tests.
- Adds a parameter to the run task so that elastisearch can
be run with a password protected keystore from source.
This commit includes a number of changes to reduce overall build
configuration time. These optimizations include:
- Removing the usage of the 'nebula.info-scm' plugin. This plugin
leverages jgit to load read various pieces of VCS information. This
is mostly overkill and we have our own minimal implementation for
determining the current commit id.
- Removing unnecessary build dependencies such as perforce and jgit
now that we don't need them. This reduces our classpath considerably.
- Expanding the usage lazy task creation, particularly in our
distribution projects. The archives and packages projects create
lots of tasks with very complex configuration. Avoiding the creation
of these tasks at configuration time gives us a nice boost.
ForbiddenApis task via the precommit task currently makes an assumption
that only the test and main source sets are present for any given project.
This commit removes that assumption and allows for any project source set's
compileClasspath class path to be added to the forbiddenApis classpath
configuration.
Guava was removed from Elasticsearch many years ago, but remnants of it
remain due to transitive dependencies. When a dependency pulls guava
into the compile classpath, devs can inadvertently begin using methods
from guava without realizing it. This commit moves guava to a runtime
dependency in the modules that it is needed.
Note that one special case is the html sanitizer in watcher. The third
party dep uses guava in the PolicyFactory class signature. However, only
calling a method on the PolicyFactory actually causes the class to be
loaded, a reference alone does not trigger compilation to look at the
class implementation. There we utilize a MethodHandle for invoking the
relevant method at runtime, where guava will continue to exist.
Change how we format exceptions to only wrap them as necessary. While
the config's overall philosophy is to put items one-per-line when
wrapping, in practice this is a little cumbersome for exception lists.
This commit migrates the RestIntegTestTask from groovy to Java.
No changes to logic should be included, however the following changes
are needed:
* Move Fixture interface to Java (Java can not depend on Groovy classes)
* Support lazy evaluation of non-input System parameters (can not use Groovy strings)
* Use constants for system property names
* Remove dead System property pass through code (the build plugin does this already)
Drop a nasty regex in our checkstyle config that I wrote a long time ago
in favor of a checkstyle extension. This is better because:
* It is faster. It saves a little more than a minute across the entire
build.
* It is easier to read. Who knew 100 lines of Java would be easier to
read than a regex, but it is.
* It has tests.
Backport of #54276.
Move and rename formatter config file, so that it is easier for
Eclipse users to import.
Also switch to an opt-out list for formatting. Instead of explcitly
listing projects that should be formatted, instead list projects
that should not be formatted. This means that any new projects will
automatically be formatted and checked.
Xpack license state contains a helper method to determine whether
security is disabled due to license level defaults. Most code needs to
know whether security is enabled, not disabled, but this method exists
so that the security being explicitly disabled can be distinguished from
licence level defaulting to disabled. However, in the case that security
is explicitly disabled, the handlers in question are never registered,
so security is implicitly not disabled explicitly, and thus we can share
a single method to know whether licensing is enabled.
This commit removes the configuration time vs execution time distinction
with regards to certain BuildParms properties. Because of the cost of
determining Java versions for configuration JDK locations we deferred
this until execution time. This had two main downsides. First, we had
to implement all this build logic in tasks, which required a bunch of
additional plumbing and complexity. Second, because some information
wasn't known during configuration time, we had to nest any build logic
that depended on this in awkward callbacks.
We now defer to the JavaInstallationRegistry recently added in Gradle.
This utility uses a much more efficient method for probing Java
installations vs our jrunscript implementation. This, combined with some
optimizations to avoid probing the current JVM as well as deferring
some evaluation via Providers when probing installations for BWC builds
we can maintain effectively the same configuration time performance
while removing a bunch of complexity and runtime cost (snapshotting
inputs for the GenerateGlobalBuildInfoTask was very expensive). The end
result should be a much more responsive build execution in almost all
scenarios.

The multiline regex rule used to detect docs code snippets greater than
76 characters in length has considerable cost to. For the high level

commit updates the rule regex pattern to use non-greedy matching when

reduction in execution time on the high level rest client module.
This commit upgrades the jackson-databind depdendency to
2.8.11.6. Additionally, we revert a previous change that put
ingest-geoip on the version of jackson-databind from the version
properties file. This is because upgrading ingest-geoip to a later
version of jackson-databind also requires an upgrade to the geoip2
dependency which is currently blocked. Therefore, if we can get to a
point where we otherwise upgrade our Jackson dependencies, we do not
want ingest-geoip to automatically come along with it.
The jdk and distribution download plugins create fake ivy repositories,

empty list by default since the stream is empty unless

related #52114fixes#53183
A recent PR #52114 introduced two new tasks to copy the REST api and tests.
A couple bugs were found in that initial PR that prevents the incremental
build from working as expected.
The pattern match of empty string is equivalent to match all and it was coded
as match none. Fixed with explicit checks against empty patterns.
The fileCollection.plus return value was ignored. Fixed by changing how the
input's fileTree is constructed.
If a project has an src/test/resources directory, and tests are being copied
without a rest-api-spec/test directory could result no-op. Masked by the other
bugs and fixed by minor changes to logic to determine if a project has tests.
We embed the :reaper project jar in the build-tools jar so we can spawn
a reaper process at build runtime. Due to this, the jar technically
isn't part of the test runtime classpath, but for input snapshotting
purposes, we should be treating it as such. Instead, because it lives
in META-INF, Gradle treats it as a normal file, which in practice means
its hash changes on every build (timestamps, etc).
This commit changes our input snapshotting strategy such that instead
we explicitly add the jar as an input to any test tasks using Gradle's
runtime classpath normalization strategy (ignore timestamps, jar entry
order, etc) and ignore the file in META-INF. This ensures that we can
properly cache test results for build-tools, why still ensuring that
changes to the :reaper project trigger reexecution of tests.
* Smarter copying of the rest specs and tests (#52114)
This PR addresses the unnecessary copying of the rest specs and allows
for better semantics for which specs and tests are copied. By default
the rest specs will get copied if the project applies
`elasticsearch.standalone-rest-test` or `esplugin` and the project
has rest tests or you configure the custom extension `restResources`.
This PR also removes the need for dozens of places where the x-pack
specs were copied by supporting copying of the x-pack rest specs too.
The plugin/task introduced here can also copy the rest tests to the
local project through a similar configuration.
The new plugin/task allows a user to minimize the surface area of
which rest specs are copied. Per project can be configured to include
only a subset of the specs (or tests). Configuring a project to only
copy the specs when actually needed should help with build cache hit
rates since we can better define what is actually in use.
However, project level optimizations for build cache hit rates are
not included with this PR.
Also, with this PR you can no longer use the includePackaged flag on
integTest task.
The following items are included in this PR:
* new plugin: `elasticsearch.rest-resources`
* new tasks: CopyRestApiTask and CopyRestTestsTask - performs the copy
* new extension 'restResources'
```
restResources {
restApi {
includeCore 'foo' , 'bar' //will include the core specs that start with foo and bar
includeXpack 'baz' //will include x-pack specs that start with baz
}
restTests {
includeCore 'foo', 'bar' //will include the core tests that start with foo and bar
includeXpack 'baz' //will include the x-pack tests that start with baz
}
}
```
We explicitly set the path for the temporary directory to use in test
tasks, but today this path is a relative path, relative to the current
working directory of the test task. The fact that we are using a
relative path here appears to be legacy, simply leftover from the days
of the Maven build. An absolute path is preferred here, since it's
explicit and we do not have to rely on everyone resolving the path
properly relative to the working directory.
Today we we set the test temporary directory explicitly by controling
java.io.tmpdir. Yet, we do not guarantee this directory exists, instead
relying on a test base class (LuceneTestCase) to create this directory
when it initializes. However, some of our tests do not rely on our test
framework, and thus do not have access to LuceneTestCase, instead
relying on RandomizedRunner directly. We should not be relying on the
temporary directory being implicitly created, instead guaranteeing that
it exists before test execution starts. This commit does that by
creating the test temporary directory before the test task executes (via
a doFirst).
This commit converts the sysv init tests from bats tests into the java
packaging tests. Since it is the last oss specific test, the bats oss
test task is also removed.

When docker-compose is required for a test fixture but is not
available, we warn log a message to this effect. This ends up being
noise during configuration, especially when working locally. This
commit changes the logging level of these messages to debug.
- Enable SunJGSS provider for Kerberos tests
- Handle the fact that in the decrypt method in KeyStoreWrapper might
not throw immediately when the GCM cipher is from BouncyCastle FIPS
and we end up with a DataInputStream that has reached it's end.
- Disable tests, jarHell, testingConventions for ingest attachment
plugin. We don't support this plugin (and document this) in FIPS
mode.
- Don't attempt to install ingest-attachment in smoke-test-plugins
Due to of a typo in the version regex pattern only the last digit of a major
version number is taken into consideration. So docker's version 17.0.1 is parsed
as 7.0.1.
While we use `== false` as a more visible form of boolean negation
(instead of `!`), the true case is implied and the true value does not
need to explicitly checked. This commit converts cases that have slipped
into the code checking for `== true`.
Backport of #51526.
Previous the formatter was breaking simple if/else statements (i.e.
without braces) onto separate lines, which could be fragile because the
formatter cannot also introduce braces. Instead, keep such expressions
on the same line.
Today we are repeatedly checking if the current build is a snapshot
build or not by reading the system property build.snapshot. This commit
formalizes this by adding a build parameter to indicate whether or not
the current build is a snapshot build.
This change changes the way to run our test suites in
JVMs configured in FIPS 140 approved mode. It does so by:
- Configuring any given runtime Java in FIPS mode with the bundled
policy and security properties files, setting the system
properties java.security.properties and java.security.policy
with the == operator that overrides the default JVM properties
and policy.
- When runtime java is 11 and higher, using BouncyCastle FIPS
Cryptographic provider and BCJSSE in FIPS mode. These are
used as testRuntime dependencies for unit
tests and internal clusters, and copied (relevant jars)
explicitly to the lib directory for testclusters used in REST tests
- When runtime java is 8, using BouncyCastle FIPS
Cryptographic provider and SunJSSE in FIPS mode.
Running the tests in FIPS 140 approved mode doesn't require an
additional configuration either in CI workers or locally and is
controlled by specifying -Dtests.fips.enabled=true
If a worktree is used, say for 7.x, and packaging tests are run, the
build within the VM will fail due to the parent checkout not being
accessible. This is because the path of the worktree is for the host
systtem, not the VM. This commit makes the git info unknown, just as if
the .git directory did not exist.
When building clusters for integration tests, today we install plugins
sequentially. We recently introduced the ability to install plugins in a
single invocation of the install plugin command. Using this can save
substantial time starting up JVMs. This commit changes the build
infrastructure to install multiple plugins at once when building
clusters for integration tests.
For the docs integration tests in particular, where we install many
plugins, this change makes a substantial difference. On my laptop, prior
to this change, installing the plugins sequentially took 115
seconds. After this change, it takes 14 seconds.
Tests in BuildPluginIT copy the workspace but exclude the build
directories based on whether the directory string representation
includes `/build/` or not. This check is problematic if the directory
of the project has a parent directory also named `build`. The change in
this commit checks to see if the path relative to the project directory
has any path parts equal to `build`.
Backport / reimplementation of #50786 on 7.x.
Opt-in `buildSrc` for automatic formatting. This required a config tweak
in order to pick up all the Java sources, and as a result more files are
now found in the Enrich plugin, that were previously missed.
I also moved the 2 Java files in `buildSrc/src/main/groovy` into the Java
directory, which required some follow-up changes.
The packed-refs support was using the original .git path, changed to use
the real .git directory after reference from worktree has been followed.

This commit adds a special run.datadir system property that may be
passed to `./gradlew run` which sets the root data directory used by the

The testclusters shutdown code was killing child processes
of the ES JVM before the ES JVM. This causes any running
ML jobs to be recorded as failed, as the ES JVM notices that
they have disconnected from it without being told to stop,
as they would if they crashed. In many test suites this
doesn't matter because the test cluster will never be
restarted, but in the case of upgrade tests it makes it
impossible to test what happens when an ML job is running
at the time of the upgrade.
This change reverses the order of killing the ES process
tree such that the parent processes are killed before their
children. A list of children is stored before killing the
parent so that they can subsequently be killed (if they
don't exit by themselves as a side effect of the parent
dying).

This commit sets xpack.security.ssl.diagnose.trust to false in all
the nodes of our TestClusters when running integTest. This is needed
in 7.x because setting xpack.security.ssl.diagnose.trust to true
wraps SunJSSE TrustManager with our own DiagnosticTrustManager and
this is not allowed when SunJSSE is in FIPS mode.
An alternative would be to set `xpack.security.fips.enabled` to
true which would also implicitly disable
xpack.security.ssl.diagnose.trust but would have additional effects
(would require that we set PBKDF2 for password hashing algorithm in
all test clusters, would prohibit using JKS keystores in nodes even
if relevant tests have been muted in FIPS mode etc.)
The testclusters registory is a singleton extension element added to the
root project which tracks which test clusters are used throughout the
multi project. But having the same name as the extension used to
configure test clusters within each subprojects breaks using a single
project for an external plugin. This commit renames the registry
extension to make it unique.

We have a long history of advancing the required compiler to the newest
JDK. JDK 13 has been with us for awhile, but we were blocked from
upgrading since Gradle was not compatible with JDK 13. With the
advancement in our project to Gradle 6 which supports JDK 13, we can now
advance our minimum compiler version. This commit updates the minimum
compiler version to JDK 13.
The elasticsearch-node tools allow manipulating the on-disk cluster state. The tool is currently
unaware of plugins and will therefore drop custom metadata from the cluster state once the
state is written out again (as it skips over the custom metadata that it can't read). This commit
preserves unknown customs when editing on-disk metadata through the elasticsearch-node
command-line tools.
This upgrade required a few significant changes. Firstly, the build
scan plugin has been renamed, and changed to be a Settings plugin rather
than a project plugin so the declaration of this has moved to our
settings.gradle file. Second, we were using a rather old version of the
Nebula ospackage plugin for building deb and rpm packages, the migration
to the latest version required some updates to get things working as
expected as we had some workarounds in place that are no longer
applicable with the latest bug fixes.
