In `aio/`, we have a mechanism to apply patches in a `postinstall` hook.
See `aio/tools/cli-patches/README.md` for more info.
Previously, we had to update `aio/tools/cli-patches/patch.js` to list
each `.patch` file separately. While working on #37688, I found it
helpful for the script to automatically pick up `.patch` files.
This commit updates the script to automatically pick up and apply
`.patch` files from the `aio/tools/cli-patches/` directory. If one wants
to keep a `.patch` file but not apply it, they can change the file's
extension or move it to a sub-directory (without having to update the
script).

As reported in #37699, the size of the main angular.io bundle sometimes
ends up bigger than expected on CI. This usually goes away after
rerunning the job a couple of times.

In the process of updating the scripts I rediscovered a bug in the deploy-to-firebase.sh script that
incorrect compared two numbers as strings. This previously worked correctly because we were comparing
single digit numbers. With the release of v10, we now compare 9 > 10 which behaves differently for
strings and numbers. The bug was fixed by switching to an arithmetic comparison of the two variables.
This bug has been fixed on the master branch but not on the 9.1.x branch. I realized this during the
rebase, but found my version to be a bit cleaner, so I kept it.

In the current version of zone.js, zone.js uses it's own package format, and it is not following the rule
of Angualr package format(APF), so it is not easily to be consumed by Angular CLI or other bundle tools.
For example, zone.js npm package has two bundles,
1. zone.js/dist/zone.js, this is a `es5` bundle.
2. zone.js/dist/zone-evergreen.js, this is a `es2015` bundle.
And Angular CLI has to add some hard-coding code to handle this case, o5376a8b139/packages/schematics/angular/application/files/src/polyfills.ts.template (L55-L58)
This PR upgrade zone.js npm package format to follow APF rule, https://docs.google.com/document/d/1CZC2rcpxffTDfRDs6p1cfbmKNLA6x5O-NtkJglDaBVs/edit#heading=h.k0mh3o8u5hx
The updated points are:
1. in package.json, update all bundle related properties
```
"main": "./bundles/zone.umd.js",
"module": "./fesm2015/zone.js",
"es2015": "./fesm2015/zone.js",
"fesm2015": "./fesm2015/zone.js",
```
2. re-organize dist folder, for example for `zone.js` bundle, now we have
```
dist/
bundles/
zone.js // this is the es5 bundle
fesm2015/
zone.js // this is the es2015 bundle (in the old version is `zone-evergreen.js`)
```
3. have several sub-packages.
1. `zone-testing`, provide zone-testing bundles include zone.js and testing libraries
2. `zone-node`, provide zone.js implemention for NodeJS
3. `zone-mix`, provide zone.js patches for both Browser and NodeJS
All those sub-packages will have their own `package.json` and the bundle will reference `bundles(es5)` and `fesm2015(es2015)`.
4. keep backward compatibility, still keep the `zone.js/dist` folder, and all bundles will be redirected to `zone.js/bundles` or `zone.js/fesm2015` folders.

The angular.io production deployment script (`deploy-to-firebase.sh`)
compares the major version corresponding to the current branch (e.g.
`8` for branch `8.1.x`) against the major stable version (e.g. `9` if
the current stable version is `9.1.0`). It then uses the result of that
comparison to determine whether the current branch corresponds to a
newer version than stable (i.e. an RC version) and thus should not be
deployed or to an older version and thus may need to be deployed to an
archive vX.angular.io project.
Previously, the script was using string comparison (`<`) to compare the
two major versions. This could produce incorrect results for an RC major
version that is numerically greater than the stable but
lexicographically smaller. For example, 10 vs 9 (10 is numerically
greater but lexicographically smaller than 9).
Example of a CI job that incorrectly tried to deploy an RC branch to
production: https://circleci.com/gh/angular/angular/726414

This commit includes the following improvements:
- Document that the `create-image.sh` script (and by extention the
`update-preview-server.sh` script) need to have access to a `yarn`
executable.
- Add a note on cron jobs running in non-interactive, non-login shells
(which affects their execution context and have different behavior vs
running the same commands in an interactive, login shell).
- Change the Node.js and `yarn` installation instructions to ensure the
`yarn` executable will be available on the `PATH` and not require an
interactive, login shell (as happens, for example, when installing it
via [nvm](https://github.com/nvm-sh/nvm)). This makes it easier to set
up a cron job that runs the `update-preview-server.sh` script.
NOTE: The equivalent updates have been made on the GCE VM that hosts the
PR preview server.
PR Close#37015
In order to avoid unnecessary operations, the `update-preview-server.sh`
script, that is used to update the PR preview server Docker container,
will only try to update the Docker container if either any files in the
`aio/aio-builds-setup/` directory have changed since the last update or
if a previous update failed. A failed previous update is detected by
checking whether the temporary `aio-builds:provisional` Docker image
still exists. This temporary image is created during the update
operation and is renamed to `aio-builds:latest` if the update goes well.
Previously, the update script was not able to detect a previous failed
attempt if the operation failed before creating the
`aio-builds:provisional` Docker image, such as if the `create-image.sh`
script failed. This could lead to a situation where the preview server
Docker container would not be updated after a failed attempt.
This commit improves the logic for detecting failed attempts to account
for this type of failures. It does this by not removing an older
`aio-builds:provisional` Docker image until a new one is successfully
created.
NOTE: While this is not full-proof, it is an improvement as it
eliminates a certain kind of failures.

The current implementation for redirecting users inside guards was in place
before the feature was added to allow `CanActivate` and `CanActivateChild` guards
to return `UrlTree` for redirecting users.
Returning `UrlTree` should be the default method, as it provides a more desirable
redirecting experience. When using `router.navigate` followed by `return false`,
the `Router` calls `resetUrlToCurrentUrlTree` (in the `finalize` operator) before
processing the navigation to the new route. This can result in an undesirable
history if the navigation was the first navigation in the application - that is,
the route will briefly be reset to just `/` (see #36187).

In the code base there are cases where there is, conceptually, a class
that is represented by a combination of an `interface`
(type declaration) and a `const` (value declaration).
For example:
```
export interface SomeClass {
count(a?: string): number;
}
export const: SomeClass = class {
someMethod(a: string = ''): number { ... }
};
```
These were being rendered as interfaces and also not
correctly showing the descriptions and default parameter
values.
In this commit such concepts are now rendered as classes.
The classes that are affected by this are:
* `DebugElement`
* `DebugNode`
* `Type`
* `EventEmitter`
* `TestBed`
Note that while decorators are also defined in this form
they have their own rendering type (`decorator`) and so
are not affecte by this.

https://github.com/angular/angular/issues/36957.
We can re-enable the test by switching to Terser that properly
handles ES2015 syntax. Previously the rollup bundle consisted
only of ES5 output as the Angular framework packages provided
ES5 output. With APF 10, there is no ES5 output except for the
non-optimizable UMD format.
Hence we either need to downlevel code to ES5, or use Terser
that supports ES2015 syntax.

This commit modifies ng_package to no longer distribute these two formats in npm packages
built by ng_package (e.g. @angular/core).
This commit intentionally doesn't fully clean up the ng_package rule to remove all traces of esm5 and fems5
build artifacts as that is a bigger cleanup and currently we are narrowing down the scope of this change
to the MVP needed for v10, which in this case is 'do not put esm5 and fesm5' into the npm packages.
More cleanup to follow: https://angular-team.atlassian.net/browse/FW-2143
BREAKING CHANGE: esm5 and fesm5 format is no longer distributed in
Angular's npm packages e.g. @angular/core
If you are not using Angular CLI to build your application or library,
and you need to be able to build es5 artifacts, then you will need to
downlevel the distributed Angular code to es5 on your own.
Angular CLI will automatically downlevel the code to es5 if differential
loading is enabled in the Angular project, so no action is required from
Angular CLI users.

The purpose of the `WrappedValue` is to allow same object instance to be treated as different for the purposes of change detection. It is currently used with `async` pipe and only with `Observables`. The use case which it covers is if the `Observable` produces the same instance of the value but it is desirable to still try to mark it as changed for the purposes of change detection.
We believe tha the above use case is too rare to warrant special handling in the framework. (Having special handling causes application slowdown for the users and mental load for the developers.) No replacement is planned for this deprecation.

(the PR preview server implementation) would run both linting and unit

Since the `dev` script should be run during development and give

`test` npm script (which is more comprehensive). Also, in most cases the
developer's IDE will show linting errors in real time in the editor.

PR Close#36837
Previously, in order to remain as deterministic as possible, the
Dockerfile for the preview server Docker image had all dependencies
pinned to specific versions. It turns out that some packages (such as
`nginx`, `nodejs`, and `openssl` - potentially others too) make older
versions unavailable on the repositories once a newer version is
available.
See for example:
- https://github.com/nodesource/distributions/issues/33
- https://askubuntu.com/questions/715104/how-can-i-downgrade-openssl-via-apt-get
This commit, therefore, removes the exact versions for these packages.
The latest versions will be installed everytime the Docker image is
built (subject to Docker caching).
PR Close#36837
In order to ease local development, self-signed SSL/TLS certificates are
created when building the preview server Docker image. These
certificates are valid for 365 days. Thus, it is possible for an old
certificate to be re-used past its expiration date due to Docker's
caching intermediate layers.
Previously, this would lead to hard-to-debug failures in the
`aio-health-check` and `aio-verify-setup` checks. Even after finding out
that the failures were caused by an expired certificate, it was not
obvious why that would be the case.
This commit adds an additional check to the `aio-health-check` command
that checks the certificates' expiration dates. This helps surface such
errors. It also prints a more helpful message, prompting the user to
build the Docker image with the `--no-cache` option to fix the problem
with self-signed certificates.
PR Close#36837
Previously, the preview server Docker image was based on Debian 9

(The GCE VM running the preview server Docker container was also
upgraded from Debian 9 to 10 on 2020-04-27.)
---
Other changes:
- Pinned the installed version of `curl` to make the `aio-health-check`
and `aio-verify-setup` checks (which use `curl`) more deterministic.
- Dropped the `*-backports` Debian repositories, since they are no
longer needed. The `*-backports` repositories were introduced in
593fe5ed25 to install `nginx` from, but
became obsolete in 2f1a862b83, which
switched to installing `nginx` from the regular repositories again.
- Added `vim` to the list of installed dependencies (for convenience

This change aligns behavior for resolvers which return EMPTY. Currently EMPTY resolvers have inconsistent behavior:
- One resolver that returns EMPTY => won't navigate and just ends on ResolveStart router event.
- Two resolvers where both return EMPTY => throws "Error: Uncaught (in promise): EmptyError: no elements in sequence"
- Two resolvers where one returns a value and the other one returns EMPTY => Navigates successfully.
With this change any EMPTY resolver will cancel navigation.
BREAKING CHANGE: Any resolver which return EMPTY will cancel navigation.
If you want to allow the navigation to continue, you will need to update the resolvers to emit
some value, (i.e. defaultIfEmpty(...), of(...), etc).

In the past, server-side rendered apps needed to convert URLs used in
API requests to absolute when rendering on the server. Originally, this
was handled in the `universal` guide and corresponding example app by
modifying the `HeroService` to use `APP_BASE_HREF` to derive the
absolute URL.
In #28956, the guide was updated to show an improved method: Specifying
an `HttpInterceptor` that took care of converting the URLs to absolute.
That interceptor was only provided when rendering the app on the server.
By mistake, the corresponding example app was not updated along with the
guide.
Since `@nguniversal/*` v7.1.0, it is no longer necessary to convert the
URLs to absolute inside the app. This is handled in the `@nguniversal`
libs (see angular/universal#897).
This commit updates the example app to remove unnecessary code and
modifies the guide to mention the issue with absolute URLs, but explain
that developers only need to worry about it when not using one of the
`@nguniversal/*-engine` packages.

Currently destroy hooks are stored in memory as `[1, hook, 5, hook]` where
the numbers represent the index at which to find the context and `hook` is
the function to be invoked. This breaks down for `multi` providers,
because the value at the index will be an array of providers, resulting in
the hook being invoked with an array of all the multi provider values,
rather than the provider that was destroyed. In ViewEngine `ngOnDestroy`
wasn't being called for `multi` providers at all.
These changes fix the issue by changing the structure of the destroy hooks to `[1, hook, 5, [0, hook, 3, hook]]` where the indexes inside the inner array point to the provider inside of the multi provider array. Note that this is slightly different from the original design which called for the structure to be `[1, hook, 5, [hook, hook]`, because in the process of implementing it, I realized that we wouldn't get passing the correct context if only some of the `multi` providers have `ngOnDestroy` and others don't.
I've run the newly-added `view_destroy_hooks` benchmark against these changes and compared it to master. The difference seems to be insignificant (between 1% and 2% slower).

Each docs example has an `example-config.json` configuration file. Among
other things, this file can be used to specify what commands to run in
order to test the example. (If not specified, the `run-example-e2e.js`
script will run a default `yarn e2e` command.)
Previously, the property specifying the test commands was called `e2e`.
This is because in the past only e2e tests were run for docs examples.
Since recently, some examples may specify commands for other types of
tests (such as unit tests). Therefore, calling the property that holds
the list of test commands `e2e` no longer makes sense and can be
misleading to people looking at the configuration files.
This commit renamed the property to the more generic `tests`. In the
future, the `run-example-e2e.js` script (and corresponding npm script)
should be renamed and refactored to also avoid giving the impression
that only e2e tests are run.

necessary, the unit tests are fixed to ensure they pass and reflect the

In #35381, a new Protractor config file was introduced in docs examples,
`protractor-puppeteer.conf.js`, that was only supposed to be used on CI
and not be shipped with the ZIP archives provided for users to download
and experiment with the docs examples locally.
The logic to ignore the `protractor-puppeteer.conf.js` file was
incorrect, resulting in the file being retained in some examples (e.g.
[universal][1]). The problem was not immediately obvious, because most
examples explicitly specify all `**/*.js` files as ignored, but for
other examples the file was retained in the ZIP archive.
This commit fixes the logic to ensure the file is excluded from all docs

In some cases, we want to test the AIO app or docs examples against the
locally built Angular packages (for example to ensure that the changes
in a commit do not introduce a breaking change). In order to achieve
this, we have the `ng-packages-installer` script that handles updating
a project's `package.json` file to use the locally built Angular
packages (and appropriate versions for their (dev-/peer-)dependencies).
Previously, `ng-packages-installer` would only consider the locally
built Angular packages (from `dist/packages-dist/`). However, given that
Zone.js is now part of the `angular/angular` repo, it makes sense to
also use the locally built Zone.js package (from `dist/zone.js-dist/`).
Otherwise, the tests might fail for commits that update both the Angular
packages (and related docs examples) and the Zone.js package. An example
of such a simultaneous change (that would have broken tests) is #33838.
This commit updates the script to install the locally built Zone.js
package (in addition to the Angular ones). The commit ensures that the

PR Close#35780
Previously, `NgPackagesInstaller` would only look for Angular local
packages and do so by listing all (deeply nested) files in
`dist/packages-dist/` and looking for `package.json` files nested two
levels deep (i.e. `dist/packages-dist/*/package.json`). Thus, it would
unnecessarily check a large number of files.
This commit changes the package detection logic to instead look for
a `package.json` file directly inside each subdirectory of
`dist/packages-dist/`, which speeds up the operation.
It also refactors the code to make it easier to look for packages in
other directories (besides `dist/packages-dist/`). This will be useful
in a subsequent commit to look for and use the locally built `zone.js`

(where `value` is `string`)
Ivy, meanwhile, has always inferred strong types for object literals, even

`strictLiteralTypes` flag to specifically control this inference. When the
flag is `false` (in compatibility mode), object and array literals receive
the `any` type.

In #35049, integration and AIO tests were changed to use the browser
provided by `puppeteer` in tests. This commit switches the docs examples
tests to use the same setup.
IMPLEMENTATION NOTE:
The examples are used to create ZIP archives that docs users can
download to experiment with. Since we want the downloaded projects to
resemble an `@angular/cli` generated project, we do not want to affect
the project's Protractor configuration in order to use `puppeteer`.
To achieve this, a second Protractor configuration is created (which is
ignored when creating the ZIP archives) that extends the original one
and passes the approperiate arguments to use the browser provided by
`puppeteer`. This new configuration (`protractor-puppeteer.conf.js`) is
used when running the docs examples tests (on CI or locally during
development).
PR Close#35381
This is a follow-up to #35049 with a few minor fixes related to using
the browser provided by `puppeteer` to run tests. Included fixes:
- Make the `webdriver-manager-update.js` really portable. (Previously,
it needed to be run from the directory that contained the
`node_modules/` directory. Now, it can be executed from a subdirectory
and will correctly resolve dependencies.)
- Use the `puppeteer`-based setup in AIO unit and e2e tests to ensure
that the downloaded ChromeDriver version matches the browser version
used in tests.
- Use the `puppeteer`-based setup in the `aio_monitoring_stable` CI job
(as happens with `aio_monitoring_next`).
- Use the [recommended way][1] of getting the browser port when using
`puppeteer` with `lighthouse` and avoid hard-coding the remote
debugging port (to be able to handle multiple instances running
concurrently).

This change changes the priority order of static styling.
Current priority:
```
(least priority)
- Static
- Component
- Directives
- Template
- Dynamic Binding
- Component
- Map/Interpolation
- Property
- Directives
- Map/Interpolation
- Property
- Template
- Map/Interpolation
- Property
(highest priority)
```
The issue with the above priority is this use case:
```
<div style="color: red;" directive-which-sets-color-blue>
```
In the above case the directive will win and the resulting color will be `blue`. However a small change of adding interpolation to the example like so. (Style interpolation is coming in https://github.com/angular/angular/pull/34202)
```
<div style="color: red; width: {{exp}}px" directive-which-sets-color-blue>
```
Changes the priority from static binding to interpolated binding which means now the resulting color is `red`. It is very surprising that adding an unrelated interpolation and style can change the `color` which was not changed. To fix that we need to make sure that the static values are associated with priority of the source (directive or template) where they were declared. The new resulting priority is:
```
(least priority)
- Component
- Static
- Map/Interpolation
- Property
- Directives
- Static
- Map/Interpolation
- Property
- Template
- Static
- Map/Interpolation
- Property
(highest priority)
```

In #35004, we started ignoring yarn's engines check for `yarn install`
in AIO's `test-production.sh` script to fix a failure in the
`aio_monitoring_stable` CI job. (See #35004 for details.)
It turns out that the version of yarn used on the stable branch (1.17.3)
`--ignore-engines` is needed on all yarn commands (including `yarn
run`). Thus, #35004 is not enough to fix the failures.
New example failure: https://circleci.com/gh/angular/angular/604341
This commit turns of the engines check for the whole
`aio_monitoring_stable` CI job to fix the failure and make the job more
robust.
PR Close#35033
There are different `DebugNode`/`DebugElement` implementations (and
associated helper functions) for ViewEngine and Ivy. Additionally, these
classes/functions, which are defined inside the `core` package, are
imported by the `platform-browser` package.
Previously, this code was not tree-shaken as expected in Ivy. #30130
partially addressed the issue, but only for the case where `core` and
`platform-browser` end up in the same closure after webpack's scope
hoisting. In cases where this is not the case, our webpack/terser based
tooling is not capable of tree-shaking it.
This commit fixes the problem, by ensuring that the code retained in Ivy
mode (due to the cross-package import) does not unnecessarily reference
`DebugNode`/`DebugElement`, allowing the code to be tree-shaken away.
This results in a 7.6KB reduction in the size of the main angular.io
bundle.

PR Close#35003
In #34955, we switched to Node.js v12 on master and 9.0.x. This causes
the `aio_monitoring_job` CI job (which checks out files from the stable
branch; currently 8.2.x) to start failing yarn's engines check (since
the 8.2.x branch expects Node.js version <11).
Example failure: https://circleci.com/gh/angular/angular/602499
Since the job is expected to run with files from both the stable and the
master branches (and since the version of Node.js is not important
here), this commit uses the `--ignore-engines` option to prevent
failures due to Node.js version mismatch.
NOTE:
Typically, the stable and master branch are on the same Node.js version,
because related PRs land on both master and the patch branch. One
exception is during RC periods, when the stable branch is different than
the patch branch. These periods are usually short, but in the case of
9.0.0 the period has lasted several months causing the CI environments
between master and the stable branch to get significantly out-of-sync.

Previously we would write to class/style as strings `element.className` and `element.style.cssText`. Turns out that approach is good for initial render but not good for updates. Updates using this approach are problematic because we have to check to see if there was an out of bound write to style and than perform reconciliation. This also requires the browser to bring up CSS parser which is expensive.
Another problem with old approach is that we had to queue the DOM writes and flush them twice. Once on element advance instruction and once in `hostBindings`. The double flushing is expensive but it also means that a directive can observe that styles are not yet written (they are written after directive executes.)
The new approach uses `element.classList.add/remove` and `element.style.setProperty/removeProperty` API for updates only (it continues to use `element.className` and `element.style.cssText` for initial render as it is cheaper.) The other change is that the styling changes are applied immediately (no queueing). This means that it is the instruction which computes priority. In some circumstances it may result in intermediate writes which are than overwritten with new value. (This should be rare)
Overall this change deletes most of the previous code and replaces it with new simplified implement. The simplification results in code savings.
PR Close#34804
NOTE: This change must be reverted with previous deletes so that it code remains in build-able state.
This change deletes old styling code and replaces it with a simplified styling algorithm.
The mental model for the new algorithm is:
- Create a linked list of styling bindings in the order of priority. All styling bindings ere executed in compiled order and than a linked list of bindings is created in priority order.
- Flush the style bindings at the end of `advance()` instruction. This implies that there are two flush events. One at the end of template `advance` instruction in the template. Second one at the end of `hostBindings` `advance` instruction when processing host bindings (if any).
- Each binding instructions effectively updates the string to represent the string at that location. Because most of the bindings are additive, this is a cheap strategy in most cases. In rare cases the strategy requires removing tokens from the styling up to this point. (We expect that to be rare case)S Because, the bindings are presorted in the order of priority, it is safe to resume the processing of the concatenated string from the last change binding.
PR Close#34616
This change moves information from instructions to declarative position:
- `ɵɵallocHostVars(vars)` => `DirectiveDef.hostVars`
- `ɵɵelementHostAttrs(attrs)` => `DirectiveDef.hostAttrs`
When merging directives it is necessary to know about `hostVars` and `hostAttrs`. Before this change the information was stored in the `hostBindings` function. This was problematic, because in order to get to the information the `hostBindings` would have to be executed. In order for `hostBindings` to be executed the directives would have to be instantiated. This means that the directive instantiation would happen before we had knowledge about the `hostAttrs` and as a result the directive could observe in the constructor that not all of the `hostAttrs` have been applied. This further complicates the runtime as we have to apply `hostAttrs` in parts over many invocations.
`ɵɵallocHostVars` was unnecessarily complicated because it would have to update the `LView` (and Blueprint) while existing directives are already executing. By moving it out of `hostBindings` function we can access it statically and we can create correct `LView` (and Blueprint) in a single pass.
This change only changes how the instructions are generated, but does not change the runtime much. (We cheat by emulating the old behavior by calling `ɵɵallocHostVars` and `ɵɵelementHostAttrs`) Subsequent change will refactor the runtime to take advantage of the static information.

Previously, the template type-checker would always construct a generic
template context type with correct bounds, even when strictTemplates was
disabled. This meant that type-checking of expressions involving that type
was stricter than View Engine.
This commit introduces a 'strictContextGenerics' flag which behaves
similarly to other 'strictTemplates' flags, and switches the inference of
generic type parameters on the component context based on the value of this
flag.

The StackBlitz API (which we use to generate StackBlitz projects on the
fly, when a user clicks on a live example link in the docs) allows
specifying the file to open in the editor by passing a query param. If
no file is specified, StackBlitz opens a default one. In the past, it
used to be `main.ts` and nowadays it seems to be `app.component.ts`.
StackBlitz builder, the tool that we use to generate the StackBlitz
projects, allows specifying the primary file by setting the `file`
property in the corresponding `stackblitz.json`.
Previously, if the `file` property was not set, StackBlitz builder would
not specify a file, thus falling back on StackBlitz's default behavior.
This was not great, because the default behavior may change unexpectedly
is the future to something that is less useful for our users.
This commit change StackBlitz builder to always specify a primary file.
If no file is specified in `stackblitz.json`, the builder will look
for the first file that exists in the example from a list of predefined
files.

This happened because of https://github.com/angular/protractor/issues/5348.
It's unclear why this typings problem does not affect `ng e2e` runs, and only affects `tsc` runs.
For now it seems sensible to alter the tests to compile only the app and not the e2e, since the intent of 2cc954d5a5 was never to verify the correctness of the e2e in the first place.
We still need a release of protractor that supports TS 3.7 though, but at least it doesn't seem to block our update proper.
