We have recently added internal metrics to monitor the amount of
indexing occurring on a node. These metrics introduce back pressure to
indexing when memory utilization is too high. This commit exposes these
stats through the node stats API.
Backport of #59293 to 7.x branch.
* Create new data-stream xpack module.
* Move TimestampFieldMapper to the new module,
this results in storing a composable index template
with data stream definition only to work with default
distribution. This way data streams can only be used
with default distribution, since a data stream can
currently only be created if a matching composable index
template exists with a data stream definition.
* Renamed `_timestamp` meta field mapper
to `_data_stream_timestamp` meta field mapper.
* Add logic to put composable index template api
to fail if `_data_stream_timestamp` meta field mapper
isn't registered. So that a more understandable
error is returned when attempting to store a template
with data stream definition via the oss distribution.
In a follow up the data stream transport and
rest actions can be moved to the xpack data-stream module.
In 7.x, we have java 8 as minimum jdk version. In the past, for
packaging tests, we relied on the system to provide an alternative jdk
to be used by the no-jdk distributions. Master switched to using a build
provided jdk, but 7.x was stuck relying on the system because it needed
a java 8 jdk. The jdk download plugin was updated a while ago to support
jdk 8, and so this PR converts the distro tests to use the build
provided jdk just as master branch does.
Note also this fixes a failure that would sometimes occur on older jdks
in windows where the expected gc filename can be different.
These tests sometimes install a template so they can be compatible with older versions, but they run
amok of the occasionally installed "global" template which changes the default number of shards.
This commit adds `allowedWarnings` and allows these warnings to be present, but doesn't fail if they
are not (since the global template is only randomly installed).

Backport of #59076 to 7.x branch.
The commit makes the following changes:
* The timestamp field of a data stream definition in a composable
index template can only be set to '@timestamp'.
* Removed custom data stream timestamp field validation and reuse the validation from `TimestampFieldMapper` and
instead only check that the _timestamp field mapping has been defined on a backing index of a data stream.
* Moved code that injects _timestamp meta field mapping from `MetadataCreateIndexService#applyCreateIndexRequestWithV2Template58956(...)` method
to `MetadataIndexTemplateService#collectMappings(...)` method.
* Fixed a bug (#58956) that cases timestamp field validation to be performed
for each template and instead of the final mappings that is created.
* only apply _timestamp meta field if index is created as part of a data stream or data stream rollover,
this fixes a docs test, where a regular index creation matches (logs-*) with a template with a data stream definition.

If the recovery source is on an old node (before 7.2), then the recovery
target won't have the safe commit after phase1 because the recovery
source does not send the global checkpoint in the clean_files step. And
if the recovery fails and retries, then the recovery stage won't
transition properly. If a sync_id is used in peer recovery, then the
clean_files step won't be executed to move the stage to TRANSLOG.

Closes#57708
This commit creates a new Gradle plugin to provide a separate task name
and source set for running YAML based REST tests. The only project
converted to use the new plugin in this PR is distribution/archives/integ-test-zip.
For which the testing has been moved to :rest-api-spec since it makes the most
sense and it avoids a small but awkward change to the distribution plugin.
The remaining cases in modules, plugins, and x-pack will be handled in followups.
This plugin is distinctly different from the plugin introduced in #55896 since
the YAML REST tests are intended to be black box tests over HTTP. As such they
should not (by default) have access to the classpath for that which they are testing.
The YAML based REST tests will be moved to separate source sets (yamlRestTest).
The which source is the target for the test resources is dependent on if this
new plugin is applied. If it is not applied, it will default to the test source
set.
Further, this introduces a breaking change for plugin developers that
use the YAML testing framework. They will now need to either use the new source set
and matching task, or configure the rest resources to use the old "test" source set that
matches the old integTest task. (The former should be preferred).
As part of this change (which is also breaking for plugin developers) the
rest resources plugin has been removed from the build plugin and now requires
either explicit application or application via the new YAML REST test plugin.
Plugin developers should be able to fix the breaking changes to the YAML tests
by adding apply plugin: 'elasticsearch.yaml-rest-test' and moving the YAML tests
under a yamlRestTest folder (instead of test)
* Replace compile configuration usage with api (#58451)
- Use java-library instead of plugin to allow api configuration usage
- Remove explicit references to runtime configurations in dependency declarations
- Make test runtime classpath input for testing convention
- required as java library will by default not have build jar file
- jar file is now explicit input of the task and gradle will ensure its properly build
* Fix compile usages in 7.x branch
When a packaging test completes, we move the elasticsearch logfile to
another location so that if the next test fails, we have just the
contents of the test that ran. However, once the test fails, we continue
trying to move this file in the subsequent calls to teardown when the
rest of the tests are skipped. This commit skips the teardown step once
we have marked the suite as failed.
This commit converts the bats tests for the plugin cli into the java
packaging test framework. The new tests only use the example plugin to
test the plugin cli. The tests for each individual plugin's contents
after being installed are handled by a new unit test for the plugin
installer added in #58287.
Today we have individual settings for configuring node roles such as
node.data and node.master. Additionally, roles are pluggable and we have
used this to introduce roles such as node.ml and node.voting_only. As
the number of roles is growing, managing these becomes harder for the
user. For example, to create a master-only node, today a user has to
configure:
- node.data: false
- node.ingest: false
- node.remote_cluster_client: false
- node.ml: false
at a minimum if they are relying on defaults, but also add:
- node.master: true
- node.transform: false
- node.voting_only: false
If they want to be explicit. This is also challenging in cases where a
user wants to have configure a coordinating-only node which requires
disabling all roles, a list which we are adding to, requiring the user
to keep checking whether a node has acquired any of these roles.
This commit addresses this by adding a list setting node.roles for which
a user has explicit control over the list of roles that a node has. If
the setting is configured, the node has exactly the roles in the list,
and not any additional roles. This means to configure a master-only
node, the setting is merely 'node.roles: [master]', and to configure a
coordinating-only node, the setting is merely: 'node.roles: []'.
With this change we deprecate the existing 'node.*' settings such as
'node.data'.
* Enable TTY password OS tests, plus refactoring (#57759)
Two keystore tests were unintentionally ignored when the
password-protected keystore work was merged. I've reënabled those tests
here.
I've also refactored the test methods a little bit to reduce the API
surface: instead of having a "startElasticsearchTtyPassword" method and
a "startElasticsearchStandardInputPassword" method, I've made a single
"startElasticsearch" method with a "useTty" boolean argument.
* Separate daemonization and non-daemonization case for tty
Centos 6 uses a version of expect that kills the elasticsearch process
when it tries to daemonize. I will fix this in future work but for now
I'm replacing it with a todo.
This commit creates a shared withCustomConfig method that may be used by
any packaging test. The method will copy the config directory and
override the conf path appropriately depending on the distribution type.
The packaging tests currently have a couple different ways of deciding
where temp files should be placed, and then sometimes used fixed file
or directory names within that dir. This commit conslidates some of that
temp dir handling by making it more compatible with the handling that
exists within the bats tests, where /tmp is not always appropriate due
to how systemd interacts with it. This commit also adds a utility
methhod for creating temp dirs, so as to ensure the new directory is
created as if a umask of 022 were used, which is not the case when using
Files.createTempDirectory without a set of permissions (it assumes 077).
This change allows to use an `index_filter` in the
field capabilities API. Indices are filtered from
the response if the provided query rewrites to `match_none`
on every shard:
````
GET metrics-*
{
"index_filter": {
"bool": {
"must": [
"range": {
"@timestamp": {
"gt": "2019"
}
}
}
}
}
````
The filtering is done on a best-effort basis, it uses the can match phase
to rewrite queries to `match_none` instead of fully executing the request.
The first shard that can match the filter is used to create the field
capabilities response for the entire index.

We can't use the high level create snapshot request any longer
since we changed some of its default parameters in `8` and those
are not understood by older versions like `7.4`.
Closes#57650
Almost every outbound message is serialized to buffers of 16k pagesize.
We were serializing these messages off the IO loop (and retaining the concrete message
instance as well) and would then enqueue it on the IO loop to be dealt with as soon as the
channel is ready.
1. This would cause buffers to be held onto for longer than necessary, causing less reuse on average.
2. If a channel was slow for some reason, not only would concrete message instances queue up for it, but also 16k of buffers would be reserved for each message until it would be written+flushed physically.
With this change, the serialization happens on the event loop which effectively limits the number of buffers that `N` IO-threads will ever use so long as messages are small and channels writable.
Also, this change dereferences the reference to the concrete outbound message as soon as it has been serialized to save some more on GC.
This reduces the GC time for a default PMC run by about 50% in experiments (3 nodes, 2G heap each, loopback ... obvious caveat is that GC isn't that heavy in the first place with recent changes but still a measurable gain).
I also expect it to be helpful for master node stability by causing less of a spike if master is e.g. hit by a large number of requests that are processed batched (e.g. shard snapshot status updates) and responded to in a short time frame all at once.
Obviously, the downside to this change is that it introduces more latency on the IO loop for the serialization. But since we read all of these messages on the IO loop as well I don't see it as much of a qualitative change really and the more predictable buffer use seems much more valuable relatively.
As the datastream information is stored in the `ClusterState.Metadata` we exposed
the `Metadata` to the `AsyncWaitStep#evaluateCondition` method in order for
the steps to be able to identify when a managed index is part of a DataStream.
If a managed index is part of a DataStream the rollover target is the DataStream
name and the highest generation index is the write index (ie. the rolled index).

The new translog bwc test checks a corruption case before 6.3.0.
However, it needs to restart the old node to reproduce, which does not
currently work given how testclusters works when plugins are installed.
As a workaround, this commit omits creating bwc tests before 6.3.0 only
when the default distribution is used.

If an upgraded node is restarted multiple times without flushing a new
index commit, then we will wrongly exclude all commits from the starting
commits. This bug is reproducible with these minimal steps: (1) create
an empty index on 6.1.4 with translog retention disabled, (2) upgrade
the cluster to 7.7.0, (3) restart the upgraded the cluster. The problem
is that with the new translog policy can trim translog without having a
new index commit, while the existing commit still refers to the previous
translog generation.

The packaging tests start elasticsearch in various ways. All of these
currently expect it is started asynchronously, yet some tests expect it
will fail to start and want to check the error output. This commit adds
a daemonize flag to the utility methods to start elasticsearch for such

should already be available since the process will have exited.

In normal operation native controllers are not expected to write
anything to stdout or stderr. However, if due to an error or
something unexpected with the environment a native controller
does write something to stdout or stderr then it will block if
nothing is reading that output.
This change makes the stdout and stderr of native controllers
reuse the same stdout and stderr as the Elasticsearch JVM (which
are by default redirected to es.stdout.log and es.stderr.log) so
that if something unexpected is written to native controller
output then:
1. The native controller process does not block, waiting for
something to read the output
2. We can see what the output was, making it easier to debug
obscure environmental problems

In bash, checking for whether an env variable exists uses the -z test,
against a stringified env var, so that the test is actually whether the
env var is empty, but not necessarily undefined. We use this to test
whether JAVA_HOME is set, to determine whether the bundled jdk should be
used. In windows, this test is an actual "undefined" check. This commit
brings the behavior on two systems in sync, opting to allow for an empty
JAVA_HOME in windows to indicate the bundled jdk should be used.

Today we pass the `RepositoriesService` to the searchable snapshots plugin
during the initialization of the `RepositoryModule`, forcing the plugin to be a
`RepositoryPlugin` even though it does not implement any repositories.
After discussion we decided it best for now to pass this in via
`Plugin#createComponents` instead, pending some future work in which plugins
can depend on services more dynamically.
I've noticed that a lot of our tests are using deprecated static methods
from the Hamcrest matchers. While this is not a big deal in any
objective sense, it seems like a small good thing to reduce compilation
warnings and be ready for a new release of the matcher library if we
need to upgrade. I've also switched a few other methods in tests that
have drop-in replacements.
Currently forbidden apis accounts for 800+ tasks in the build. These
tasks are aggressively created by the plugin. In forbidden apis 3.0, we
will get task avoidance
(https://github.com/policeman-tools/forbidden-apis/pull/162), but we
need to ourselves use the same task avoidance mechanisms to not trigger
these task creations. This commit does that for our foribdden apis
usages, in preparation for upgrading to 3.0 when it is released.
Backport of #55073.
We added tasks to build an ARM distribution and Docker image, but didn't
provide any way to run packaging tests against them. Add extra loops on
the possible Architecture values, and skip tasks that can't be run on
the current Architecture.
Apply the :distribution:archives naming convention to some of the Docker
sub-projects, so that we have a more consistent naming scheme.
Also, we've seen some examples of Docker packaging tests failing sporadically
when they try to clean up the temp directory, citing a not-empty
directory. Ensure that any running container is removed before cleaning
up the temp dir, in an effort to avoid this problem.
This change converts the module and plugin parameters
for testClusters to be lazy. Meaning that the values
are not resolved until they are actually used. This
removes the requirement to use project.afterEvaluate to
be able to resolve the bundle artifact.
Note - this does not completely remove the need for afterEvaluate
since it is still needed for the custom resource extension.
This commit includes a number of changes to reduce overall build
configuration time. These optimizations include:
- Removing the usage of the 'nebula.info-scm' plugin. This plugin
leverages jgit to load read various pieces of VCS information. This
is mostly overkill and we have our own minimal implementation for
determining the current commit id.
- Removing unnecessary build dependencies such as perforce and jgit
now that we don't need them. This reduces our classpath considerably.
- Expanding the usage lazy task creation, particularly in our
distribution projects. The archives and packages projects create
lots of tasks with very complex configuration. Avoiding the creation
of these tasks at configuration time gives us a nice boost.
`scripted_metric` did not work with cross cluster search because it
assumed that you'd never perform a partial reduction, serialize the
results, and then perform a final reduction. That
serialized-after-partial-reduction step was broken.
This is also required to support #54758.
This is a simple naming change PR, to fix the fact that "metadata" is a
single English word, and for too long we have not followed general
naming conventions for it. We are also not consistent about it, for
example, METADATA instead of META_DATA if we were trying to be
consistent with MetaData (although METADATA is correct when considered
in the context of "metadata"). This was a simple find and replace across
the code base, only taking a few minutes to fix this naming issue
forever.
This drop the "top level" pipeline aggregators from the aggregation
result tree which should save a little memory and a few serialization
bytes. Perhaps more imporantly, this provides a mechanism by which we
can remove *all* pipelines from the aggregation result tree. This will
save quite a bit of space when pipelines are deep in the tree.
Sadly, doing this isn't simple because of backwards compatibility. Nodes
before 7.7.0 *need* those pipelines. We provide them by setting passing
a `Supplier<PipelineTree>` into the root of the aggregation tree that we
only call if we need to serialize to a version before 7.7.0.
This solution works for cross cluster search because we always reduce
the aggregations in each remote cluster and then forward them back to
the coordinating node. Its quite possible that the coordinating node
needs the pipeline (say it is version 7.1.0) and the gateway node in the
remote cluster doesn't (version 7.7.0). In that case the data nodes
won't send the pipeline aggregations back to the gateway node.
Critically, the gateway node *will* send the pipeline aggregations back
to the coordinating node. This is all managed with that
`Supplier<PipelineTree>`, but *how* it is managed is a bit tricky.
Currently the remote info api has added a number of possible fields
(proxy, num_socket_connections, etc) that are available in proxy mode.
These fields are not aligned with what the settings are named. This
commit modifies this API to align with the settings.
This commit changes the pre_filter_shard_size default from 128 to unspecified.
This allows to apply heuristics based on the request and the target indices when deciding
whether the can match phase should run or not. When unspecified, this pr runs the can match phase
automatically if one of these conditions is met:
* The request targets more than 128 shards.
* The request contains read-only indices.
* The primary sort of the query targets an indexed field.
Users can opt-out from this behavior by setting the `pre_filter_shard_size` to a static value.

It's simple to deprecate a field used in an ObjectParser just by adding deprecation
markers to the relevant ParseField objects. The warnings themselves don't currently
have any context - they simply say that a deprecated field has been used, but not
where in the input xcontent it appears. This commit adds the parent object parser
name and XContentLocation to these deprecation messages.
Note that the context is automatically stripped from warning messages when they
are asserted on by integration tests and REST tests, because randomization of
xcontent type during these tests means that the XContentLocation is not constant

Add `:qa:os` and `:benchmarks` to the list of automatically formatted
projects, and apply some manual fix-ups to polish it up.
In particular, I noticed that `Files.write(...)` when passed a list will
automaticaly apply a UTF-8 encoding and write a newline after each line,
making it easier to use than FileUtils.append. It's even available from
1.8.
Also, in the Allocators class, a number of methods declared thrown exceptions that IntelliJ reported were never thrown, and as far as I could see this is true, so I removed the exceptions.
Currently 3 remote cluster settings (ping interval, skip unavailable,
and compression) have a dependency on the seeds setting being
comfigured. With proxy mode, it is now possible that these settings the
seeds setting has not been configured. This commit removes this
dependency and adds new validation for these settings.
* Smarter copying of the rest specs and tests (#52114)
This PR addresses the unnecessary copying of the rest specs and allows
for better semantics for which specs and tests are copied. By default
the rest specs will get copied if the project applies
`elasticsearch.standalone-rest-test` or `esplugin` and the project
has rest tests or you configure the custom extension `restResources`.
This PR also removes the need for dozens of places where the x-pack
specs were copied by supporting copying of the x-pack rest specs too.
The plugin/task introduced here can also copy the rest tests to the
local project through a similar configuration.
The new plugin/task allows a user to minimize the surface area of
which rest specs are copied. Per project can be configured to include
only a subset of the specs (or tests). Configuring a project to only
copy the specs when actually needed should help with build cache hit
rates since we can better define what is actually in use.
However, project level optimizations for build cache hit rates are
not included with this PR.
Also, with this PR you can no longer use the includePackaged flag on
integTest task.
The following items are included in this PR:
* new plugin: `elasticsearch.rest-resources`
* new tasks: CopyRestApiTask and CopyRestTestsTask - performs the copy
* new extension 'restResources'
```
restResources {
restApi {
includeCore 'foo' , 'bar' //will include the core specs that start with foo and bar
includeXpack 'baz' //will include x-pack specs that start with baz
}
restTests {
includeCore 'foo', 'bar' //will include the core tests that start with foo and bar
includeXpack 'baz' //will include the x-pack tests that start with baz
}
}
```
Backport of #52525.
Closes#52503. Implement a list of `_FILE` env vars that will be used to
populate env vars with file content, instead of processing all `_FILE`
vars in the environment.
This commit modifies the codebase so that our production code uses a
single instance of the IndexNameExpressionResolver class. This change
is being made in preparation for allowing name expression resolution
to be augmented by a plugin.
In order to remove some instances of IndexNameExpressionResolver, the
single instance is added as a parameter of Plugin#createComponents and
PersistentTaskPlugin#getPersistentTasksExecutor.

* Refactor Inflexible Snapshot Repository BwC (#52365)
Transport the version to use for a snapshot instead of whether to use shard generations in the snapshots in progress entry. This allows making upcoming repository metadata changes in a flexible manner in an analogous way to how we handle serialization BwC elsewhere.
Also, exposing the version at the repository API level will make it easier to do BwC relevant changes in derived repositories like source only or encrypted.
The oss and default bats tests were removed, but these references to
them remained, causing gradle failures when trying to run packaging
tests. While the upgrade and plugins bats tests should still be tested,
that is being handled in #51565. This commit removes the outdated
references.

* Filter empty lines from docker ls response
In order to cut down on test time, our docker/vagrant tests build the
docker image outside of the vagrant VM. When we get around to launching
the Vagrant VM, we mount that already-built docker image to a known
location. At that point, we need to load the docker image. But we only
want to load it once. As we're running tests, we use "docker ls" to
check whether the local image is loaded for use. Empty output from the
particular ls invocation means no image is loaded.
There was a bug in how we checked this. In Java, splitting an empty
string will yield an array containing one empty string. So when we're
counting the output from the docker ls command, we need to filter out
empty lines in order to proceed to loading the image for docker tests.
This commit removes the need for DeprecatedRoute and ReplacedRoute to
have an instance of a DeprecationLogger. Instead the RestController now
has a DeprecationLogger that will be used for all deprecated and
replaced route messages.

This commit converts the sysv init tests from bats tests into the java
packaging tests. Since it is the last oss specific test, the bats oss
test task is also removed.

- Enable SunJGSS provider for Kerberos tests
- Handle the fact that in the decrypt method in KeyStoreWrapper might
not throw immediately when the GCM cipher is from BouncyCastle FIPS
and we end up with a DataInputStream that has reached it's end.
- Disable tests, jarHell, testingConventions for ingest attachment
plugin. We don't support this plugin (and document this) in FIPS
mode.
- Don't attempt to install ingest-attachment in smoke-test-plugins
This commit changes how RestHandlers are registered with the
RestController so that a RestHandler no longer needs to register itself
with the RestController. Instead the RestHandler interface has new
methods which when called provide information about the routes
(method and path combinations) that are handled by the handler
including any deprecated and/or replaced combinations.
This change also makes the publication of RestHandlers safe since they
no longer publish a reference to themselves within their constructors.

Backport of #51950
This commit introduces the ability to override JVM options by adding
custom JVM options files to a jvm.options.d directory. This simplifies
administration of Elasticsearch by not requiring administrators to keep
the root jvm.options file in sync with changes that we make to the root
jvm.options file. Instead, they are not expected to modify this file but
instead supply their own in jvm.options.d. In Docker installations, this
means they can bind mount this directory in. In future versions of
Elasticsearch, we can consider removing the root jvm.options file
(instead, providing all options there as system JVM options).
In the packaging tests, we added convenience methods for asserting file
existence and file non-existence. This commit replaces the remaining
uses of assertFalse/assertTrue in favor of these dedicated matchers.
Java 8 can not infer types as well as Java 11 does. This means a
backport of some code that relied on Java 11's superior abilities to
infer types caused Java 8's head to explode trying to infer the same
type in 7.x. This commit addresses this by giving Java 8 the types that
it needs.
