Deprecate REST access to System Indices (#63274) (Original #60945)
This PR adds deprecation warnings when accessing System Indices via the REST layer. At this time, these warnings are only enabled for Snapshot builds by default, to allow projects external to Elasticsearch additional time to adjust their access patterns.

Deprecation warnings will be triggered by all REST requests which access registered System Indices, except for purpose-specific APIs which access System Indices as an implementation detail a few specific APIs which will continue to allow access to system indices by default:

- `GET _cluster/health`
- `GET {index}/_recovery`
- `GET _cluster/allocation/explain`
- `GET _cluster/state`
- `POST _cluster/reroute`
- `GET {index}/_stats`
- `GET {index}/_segments`
- `GET {index}/_shard_stores`
- `GET _cat/[indices,aliases,health,recovery,shards,segments]`

Deprecation warnings for accessing system indices take the form:
```
this request accesses system indices: [.some_system_index], but in a future major version, direct access to system indices will be prevented by default
```

Switch bundled jdk back to Oracle JDK (#63288) (#63290)
We switched to adoptopenjdk from oracle jdk to rely on the notarization
found in adoptopnejdk on MacOS. However, that notarization still had
issues, and we currently do our own notarization of the entire
distribution, including the jdk. The recent bump to jdk 15 has revealed
openjdk to be lax in maintaining support for older systems. Since the
notarization is no longer an issue, this PR moves the bundled jdk back
to Oracle, in order to continue supporting those older systems affected
by adoptopenjdk 15.

Handle JAVA_HOME better in packaging tests (#62905)
JAVA_HOME is set as necessary in packaging tests, depending on whether
it is needed for no-jdk distributions or testing override behavior. We
currently rely on gradle finding java through PATH. However, JAVA_HOME
can sometimes be set by the system itself, which then leaks through to
the packaging test. This commit reworks our handling of JAVA_HOME to
pass it through for gradle, and then explicitly clear it whenever
running shell commands in packaging tests.

[7.x] Add index.routing.allocation.include._tier_preference setting (#62589) (#62667)
This commit adds the `index.routing.allocation.prefer._tier` setting to the
`DataTierAllocationDecider`. This special-purpose allocation setting lets a user specify a
preference-based list of tiers for an index to be assigned to. For example, if the setting were set
to:

```
"index.routing.allocation.prefer._tier": "data_hot,data_warm,data_content"
```

If the cluster contains any nodes with the `data_hot` role, the decider will only allow them to be
allocated on the `data_hot` node(s). If there are no `data_hot` nodes, but there are `data_warm` and
`data_content` nodes, then the index will be allowed to be allocated on `data_warm` nodes.

This allows us to specify an index's preference for tier(s) without causing the index to be
unassigned if no nodes of a preferred tier are available.

Subsequent work will change the ILM migration to make additional use of this setting.

Simplify adding plugins and modules to testclusters (#61886)
There are currently half a dozen ways to add plugins and modules for
test clusters to use. All of them require the calling project to peek
into the plugin or module they want to use to grab its bundlePlugin
task, and then both depend on that task, as well as extract the archive
path the task will produce. This creates cross project dependencies that
are difficult to detect, and if the dependent plugin/module has not yet
been configured, the build will fail because the task does not yet
exist.

This commit makes the plugin and module methods for testclusters
symmetetric, and simply adding a file provider directly, or a project
path that will produce the plugin/module zip. Internally this new
variant uses normal configuration/dependencies across projects to get
the zip artifact. It also has the added benefit of no longer needing the
caller to add to the test task a dependsOn for bundlePlugin task.

The recursive data.path FilePermission check is an extremely hot

[7.x] Allocate newly created indices on data_hot tier nodes (#61342) (#61650)
This commit adds the functionality to allocate newly created indices on nodes in the "hot" tier by
default when they are created.

This does not break existing behavior, as nodes with the `data` role are considered to be part of
the hot tier. Users that separate their deployments by using the `data_hot` (and `data_warm`,
`data_cold`, `data_frozen`) roles will have their data allocated on the hot tier nodes now by
default.

This change is a little more complicated than changing the default value for
`index.routing.allocation.include._tier` from null to "data_hot". Instead, this adds the ability to
have a plugin inject a setting into the builder for a newly created index. This has the benefit of
allowing this setting to be visible as part of the settings when retrieving the index, for example:

```
// Create an index
PUT /eggplant
// Get an index
GET /eggplant?flat_settings
```

Returns the default settings now of:

```json
{
  "eggplant" : {
    "aliases" : { },
    "mappings" : { },
    "settings" : {
      "index.creation_date" : "1597855465598",
      "index.number_of_replicas" : "1",
      "index.number_of_shards" : "1",
      "index.provided_name" : "eggplant",
      "index.routing.allocation.include._tier" : "data_hot",
      "index.uuid" : "6ySG78s9RWGystRipoBFCA",
      "index.version.created" : "8000099"
    }
  }
}
```

After the initial setting of this setting, it can be treated like any other index level setting.

This new setting is *not* set on a new index if any of the following is true:

- The index is created with an `index.routing.allocation.include.<anything>` setting
- The index is created with an `index.routing.allocation.exclude.<anything>` setting
- The index is created with an `index.routing.allocation.require.<anything>` setting
- The index is created with a null `index.routing.allocation.include._tier` value
- The index was created from an existing source metadata (shrink, clone, split, etc)

System index reads in separate threadpool (#60927)
This commit introduces a new thread pool, `system_read`, which is
intended for use by system indices for all read operations (get and
search). The `system_read` pool is a fixed thread pool with a maximum
number of threads equal to lesser of half of the available processors
or 5. Given the combination of both get and read operations in this
thread pool, the queue size has been set to 2000. The motivation for
this change is to allow system read operations to be serviced in spite
of the number of user searches.

In order to avoid a significant performance hit due to pattern matching
on all search requests, a new metadata flag is added to mark indices
as system or non-system. Previously created system indices will have
flag added to their metadata upon upgrade to a version with this
capability.

Additionally, this change also introduces a new class, `SystemIndices`,
which encapsulates logic around system indices. Currently, the class
provides a method to check if an index is a system index and a method
to find a matching index descriptor given the name of an index.

Deduplicate Index Metadata in BlobStore (#50278) (#59514)
This PR introduces two new fields in to `RepositoryData` (index-N) to track the blob name of `IndexMetaData` blobs and their content via setting generations and uuids. This is used to deduplicate the `IndexMetaData` blobs (`meta-{uuid}.dat` in the indices folders under `/indices` so that new metadata for an index is only written to the repository during a snapshot if that same metadata can't be found in another snapshot.
This saves one write per index in the common case of unchanged metadata thus saving cost and making snapshot finalization drastically faster if many indices are being snapshotted at the same time.

The implementation is mostly analogous to that for shard generations in #46250 and piggy backs on the BwC mechanism introduced in that PR (which means this PR needs adjustments if it doesn't go into `7.6`).

Relates to #45736 as it improves the efficiency of snapshotting unchanged indices
Relates to #49800 as it has the potential of loading the index metadata for multiple snapshots of the same index concurrently much more efficient speeding up future concurrent snapshot delete

Use consistent system jdk in 7.x packaging tests (#59257)
In 7.x, we have java 8 as minimum jdk version. In the past, for
packaging tests, we relied on the system to provide an alternative jdk
to be used by the no-jdk distributions. Master switched to using a build
provided jdk, but 7.x was stuck relying on the system because it needed
a java 8 jdk. The jdk download plugin was updated a while ago to support
jdk 8, and so this PR converts the distro tests to use the build
provided jdk just as master branch does.

Note also this fixes a failure that would sometimes occur on older jdks
in windows where the expected gc filename can be different.

Allow warnings about 'global' template in upgrade tests (#59242)
These tests sometimes install a template so they can be compatible with older versions, but they run
amok of the occasionally installed "global" template which changes the default number of shards.

This commit adds `allowedWarnings` and allows these warnings to be present, but doesn't fail if they

Fix the timestamp field of a data stream to @timestamp (#59210)
Backport of #59076 to 7.x branch.

The commit makes the following changes:
* The timestamp field of a data stream definition in a composable
  index template can only be set to '@timestamp'.
* Removed custom data stream timestamp field validation and reuse the validation from `TimestampFieldMapper` and
  instead only check that the _timestamp field mapping has been defined on a backing index of a data stream.
* Moved code that injects _timestamp meta field mapping from `MetadataCreateIndexService#applyCreateIndexRequestWithV2Template58956(...)` method
  to `MetadataIndexTemplateService#collectMappings(...)` method.
* Fixed a bug (#58956) that cases timestamp field validation to be performed
  for each template and instead of the final mappings that is created.
* only apply _timestamp meta field if index is created as part of a data stream or data stream rollover,
this fixes a docs test, where a regular index creation matches (logs-*) with a template with a data stream definition.

7.x - Create plugin for yamlTest task (#56841) (#59090)
This commit creates a new Gradle plugin to provide a separate task name
and source set for running YAML based REST tests. The only project
converted to use the new plugin in this PR is distribution/archives/integ-test-zip.
For which the testing has been moved to :rest-api-spec since it makes the most
sense and it avoids a small but awkward change to the distribution plugin.

The remaining cases in modules, plugins, and x-pack will be handled in followups.

This plugin is distinctly different from the plugin introduced in #55896 since
the YAML REST tests are intended to be black box tests over HTTP. As such they
should not (by default) have access to the classpath for that which they are testing.

The YAML based REST tests will be moved to separate source sets (yamlRestTest).
The which source is the target for the test resources is dependent on if this
new plugin is applied. If it is not applied, it will default to the test source
set.

Further, this introduces a breaking change for plugin developers that
use the YAML testing framework. They will now need to either use the new source set
and matching task, or configure the rest resources to use the old "test" source set that
matches the old integTest task. (The former should be preferred).

As part of this change (which is also breaking for plugin developers) the
rest resources plugin has been removed from the build plugin and now requires
either explicit application or application via the new YAML REST test plugin.

Plugin developers should be able to fix the breaking changes to the YAML tests
by adding apply plugin: 'elasticsearch.yaml-rest-test' and moving the YAML tests
under a yamlRestTest folder (instead of test)

Introduce node.roles setting (#58512)
Today we have individual settings for configuring node roles such as
node.data and node.master. Additionally, roles are pluggable and we have
used this to introduce roles such as node.ml and node.voting_only. As
the number of roles is growing, managing these becomes harder for the
user. For example, to create a master-only node, today a user has to
configure:
 - node.data: false
 - node.ingest: false
 - node.remote_cluster_client: false
 - node.ml: false

at a minimum if they are relying on defaults, but also add:
 - node.master: true
 - node.transform: false
 - node.voting_only: false

If they want to be explicit. This is also challenging in cases where a
user wants to have configure a coordinating-only node which requires
disabling all roles, a list which we are adding to, requiring the user
to keep checking whether a node has acquired any of these roles.

This commit addresses this by adding a list setting node.roles for which
a user has explicit control over the list of roles that a node has. If
the setting is configured, the node has exactly the roles in the list,
and not any additional roles. This means to configure a master-only
node, the setting is merely 'node.roles: [master]', and to configure a
coordinating-only node, the setting is merely: 'node.roles: []'.

With this change we deprecate the existing 'node.*' settings such as
'node.data'.

Enable TTY password OS tests, plus refactoring (#57759) (#58200)
* Enable TTY password OS tests, plus refactoring (#57759)

Two keystore tests were unintentionally ignored when the
password-protected keystore work was merged. I've reënabled those tests

I've also refactored the test methods a little bit to reduce the API
surface: instead of having a "startElasticsearchTtyPassword" method and
a "startElasticsearchStandardInputPassword" method, I've made a single
"startElasticsearch" method with a "useTty" boolean argument.

* Separate daemonization and non-daemonization case for tty

Centos 6 uses a version of expect that kills the elasticsearch process
when it tries to daemonize. I will fix this in future work but for now

The packaging tests currently have a couple different ways of deciding

temp dir handling by making it more compatible with the handling that
exists within the bats tests, where /tmp is not always appropriate due
to how systemd interacts with it. This commit also adds a utility
methhod for creating temp dirs, so as to ensure the new directory is
created as if a umask of 022 were used, which is not the case when using

Allow index filtering in field capabilities API (#57276) (#58299)
This change allows to use an `index_filter` in the
field capabilities API. Indices are filtered from
the response if the provided query rewrites to `match_none`
on every shard:

````
GET metrics-*
{
  "index_filter": {
    "bool": {
      "must": [
        "range": {
          "@timestamp": {
            "gt": "2019"
          }
        }
      }
  }
}
````

The filtering is done on a best-effort basis, it uses the can match phase
to rewrite queries to `match_none` instead of fully executing the request.
The first shard that can match the filter is used to create the field
capabilities response for the entire index.

Serialize Outbound Messages on IO Threads (#56961) (#57080)
Almost every outbound message is serialized to buffers of 16k pagesize.
We were serializing these messages off the IO loop (and retaining the concrete message
instance as well) and would then enqueue it on the IO loop to be dealt with as soon as the
channel is ready.
1. This would cause buffers to be held onto for longer than necessary, causing less reuse on average.
2. If a channel was slow for some reason, not only would concrete message instances queue up for it, but also 16k of buffers would be reserved for each message until it would be written+flushed physically.

With this change, the serialization happens on the event loop which effectively limits the number of buffers that `N` IO-threads will ever use so long as messages are small and channels writable.
Also, this change dereferences the reference to the concrete outbound message as soon as it has been serialized to save some more on GC.

This reduces the GC time for a default PMC run by about 50% in experiments (3 nodes, 2G heap each, loopback ... obvious caveat is that GC isn't that heavy in the first place with recent changes but still a measurable gain).
I also expect it to be helpful for master node stability by causing less of a spike if master is e.g. hit by a large number of requests that are processed batched (e.g. shard snapshot status updates) and responded to in a short time frame all at once.

Obviously, the downside to this change is that it introduces more latency on the IO loop for the serialization. But since we read all of these messages on the IO loop as well I don't see it as much of a qualitative change really and the more predictable buffer use seems much more valuable relatively.

[7.x] ILM: add support for rolling over data streams (#57295) (#57515)
As the datastream information is stored in the `ClusterState.Metadata` we exposed
the `Metadata` to the `AsyncWaitStep#evaluateCondition` method in order for
the steps to be able to identify when a managed index is part of a DataStream.

If a managed index is part of a DataStream the rollover target is the DataStream
name and the highest generation index is the write index (ie. the rolled index).

Prevent unexpected native controller output hanging the process (#56685)
In normal operation native controllers are not expected to write
anything to stdout or stderr. However, if due to an error or
something unexpected with the environment a native controller
does write something to stdout or stderr then it will block if
nothing is reading that output.

This change makes the stdout and stderr of native controllers
reuse the same stdout and stderr as the Elasticsearch JVM (which
are by default redirected to es.stdout.log and es.stderr.log) so
that if something unexpected is written to native controller
output then:

1. The native controller process does not block, waiting for
   something to read the output
2. We can see what the output was, making it easier to debug
   obscure environmental problems

This required a bit of a refactor to percentiles itself. Before,
the Builder would switch on the chosen algo to generate an
algo-specific factory. This doesn't work (or at least, would be
difficult) in the new VS framework.

This refactor consolidates both factories together and introduces
a PercentilesConfig object to act as a standardized way to pass
algo-specific parameters through the factory. This object
is then used when deciding which kind of aggregator to create

be moved in a subsequent PR.

- Introduces a new API (`getBareAggregatorRegistrar()`) which allows plugins to register aggregations against existing agg definitions defined in Core.
- This moves the histogram VSType over to XPack where it belongs. `getHistogramValues()` still remains as a Core concept
- Moves the histo-specific bits over to xpack (e.g. the actual aggregator logic). This requires extra boilerplate since we need to create a new "Analytics" Percentile/Rank aggregators to deal with the histo field. Doubly-so since percentiles/ranks are extra boiler-plate'y... should be much lighter for other aggs

Use task avoidance with forbidden apis (#55034)
Currently forbidden apis accounts for 800+ tasks in the build. These
tasks are aggressively created by the plugin. In forbidden apis 3.0, we
will get task avoidance
(https://github.com/policeman-tools/forbidden-apis/pull/162), but we
need to ourselves use the same task avoidance mechanisms to not trigger
these task creations. This commit does that for our foribdden apis

Improve total build configuration time (#54611) (#54994)
This commit includes a number of changes to reduce overall build
configuration time. These optimizations include:

- Removing the usage of the 'nebula.info-scm' plugin. This plugin
   leverages jgit to load read various pieces of VCS information. This
   is mostly overkill and we have our own minimal implementation for
   determining the current commit id.
- Removing unnecessary build dependencies such as perforce and jgit
   now that we don't need them. This reduces our classpath considerably.
- Expanding the usage lazy task creation, particularly in our
   distribution projects. The archives and packages projects create
   lots of tasks with very complex configuration. Avoiding the creation
   of these tasks at configuration time gives us a nice boost.

This is a simple naming change PR, to fix the fact that "metadata" is a

example, METADATA instead of META_DATA if we were trying to be
consistent with MetaData (although METADATA is correct when considered
in the context of "metadata"). This was a simple find and replace across

forever.

Save a little space in agg tree (backport of #53730) (#54213)
This drop the "top level" pipeline aggregators from the aggregation
result tree which should save a little memory and a few serialization
bytes. Perhaps more imporantly, this provides a mechanism by which we
can remove *all* pipelines from the aggregation result tree. This will
save quite a bit of space when pipelines are deep in the tree.

Sadly, doing this isn't simple because of backwards compatibility. Nodes
before 7.7.0 *need* those pipelines. We provide them by setting passing
a `Supplier<PipelineTree>` into the root of the aggregation tree that we
only call if we need to serialize to a version before 7.7.0.

This solution works for cross cluster search because we always reduce
the aggregations in each remote cluster and then forward them back to
the coordinating node. Its quite possible that the coordinating node
needs the pipeline (say it is version 7.1.0) and the gateway node in the
remote cluster doesn't (version 7.7.0). In that case the data nodes
won't send the pipeline aggregations back to the gateway node.
Critically, the gateway node *will* send the pipeline aggregations back
to the coordinating node. This is all managed with that
`Supplier<PipelineTree>`, but *how* it is managed is a bit tricky.

Add heuristics to compute pre_filter_shard_size when unspecified (#53873) (#54007)
This commit changes the pre_filter_shard_size default from 128 to unspecified.
This allows to apply heuristics based on the request and the target indices when deciding
whether the can match phase should run or not. When unspecified, this pr runs the can match phase
automatically if one of these conditions is met:
  * The request targets more than 128 shards.
  * The request contains read-only indices.
  * The primary sort of the query targets an indexed field.
Users can opt-out from this behavior by setting the `pre_filter_shard_size` to a static value.

Alan Woodward d23112f441 Report parser name and location in XContent deprecation warnings (#53805)
It's simple to deprecate a field used in an ObjectParser just by adding deprecation
markers to the relevant ParseField objects. The warnings themselves don't currently
have any context - they simply say that a deprecated field has been used, but not
where in the input xcontent it appears. This commit adds the parent object parser
name and XContentLocation to these deprecation messages.

Note that the context is automatically stripped from warning messages when they
are asserted on by integration tests and REST tests, because randomization of
xcontent type during these tests means that the XContentLocation is not constant

[7.x] Smarter copying of the rest specs and tests (#52114) (#52798)
* Smarter copying of the rest specs and tests (#52114)

This PR addresses the unnecessary copying of the rest specs and allows
for better semantics for which specs and tests are copied. By default
the rest specs will get copied if the project applies
`elasticsearch.standalone-rest-test` or `esplugin` and the project
has rest tests or you configure the custom extension `restResources`.

This PR also removes the need for dozens of places where the x-pack
specs were copied by supporting copying of the x-pack rest specs too.

The plugin/task introduced here can also copy the rest tests to the
local project through a similar configuration.

The new plugin/task allows a user to minimize the surface area of
which rest specs are copied. Per project can be configured to include
only a subset of the specs (or tests). Configuring a project to only
copy the specs when actually needed should help with build cache hit
rates since we can better define what is actually in use.
However, project level optimizations for build cache hit rates are
not included with this PR.

Also, with this PR you can no longer use the includePackaged flag on
integTest task.

The following items are included in this PR:
* new plugin: `elasticsearch.rest-resources`
* new tasks: CopyRestApiTask and CopyRestTestsTask - performs the copy
* new extension 'restResources'
```
restResources {
  restApi {
    includeCore 'foo' , 'bar' //will include the core specs that start with foo and bar
    includeXpack 'baz' //will include x-pack specs that start with baz
  }
  restTests {
    includeXpack 'baz' //will include the x-pack tests that start with baz
  }
}
Filter empty lines from "docker ls" response (#52081)
* Filter empty lines from docker ls response
In order to cut down on test time, our docker/vagrant tests build the
docker image outside of the vagrant VM. When we get around to launching
the Vagrant VM, we mount that already-built docker image to a known
location. At that point, we need to load the docker image. But we only
want to load it once. As we're running tests, we use "docker ls" to
check whether the local image is loaded for use. Empty output from the
particular ls invocation means no image is loaded.
There was a bug in how we checked this. In Java, splitting an empty
string will yield an array containing one empty string. So when we're
counting the output from the docker ls command, we need to filter out
empty lines in order to proceed to loading the image for docker tests.
